The Atlanta Braves played a 6.5 hour game going 19 innings before defeating Pittsburgh 4-3 around 2:30am today.

Unfortunately they won it only because the umpire at home plate blew the call completely. We can only assume the umpire was sleepy and wanted to get to his hotel room.

That was a pretty good mother of regular season super-bad calls - if somehow the Pirates end up one game behind the Braves for the division title, you know exactly where eyes will turn.

In a way, it saved Scott Proctor from a major embarassment - he definitely hasn't had much practice running out of the batters box on his way to first based on his Superman-style flop on the ground he made trying to get going (the catcher was about to turn to first to see if he could get the double play before the ump made his inexplicable "safe" call)

I couldn't imagine being behind the plate for 19 innings. Maybe they need to move another umpire to home plate at the end of the 12th.

The runner was out, and the throw beat him by a mile, but he wasn't as out as everyone tried to make it. I have seen a lot worse calls than that one.

...just not in the bottom of the 19th.
