While Georgia is apparently staying dry (though we could desperately use some rain), I know a bunch of you are going to be in Irene's path over the next few days. Be safe!

Morning!

Ran 3.5 (with hills) by myself, then walked Gus through the hilly section (2 miles) then Jack was mad he didn't get to go (he was glaring at me), so I walked him to the end of the street and he got to meet our neighbor's new dog Bella, a 3 y/o springer spaniel. Really really sweet dog. Supposedly a big chicken, but didn't seem afraid of Jack.

Going to throw some big salad bowls today, one of which is a commission. (The ones I made for the sale earlier this month weren't big enough at 11'' diameter x 9" deep. ha. Apparently she feeds A LOT of people at Thanksgiving.)

Aaaaaaand I'm going to make some more wooly mammoths.

Good morning!

I am going to be testing ~75 athletes today. Should take 3-4 hours. Fun Saturday, I know.

did a walk and some strength stuff yesterday. I managed a few squats and lunges, but could really feel that in my hamstrings. Oy, recovering/rehab can really suck sometimes.

we're ready for irene (well,as ready as two californians can be!).

my hospital was evacuated yesterday so i stayed late to help with the process. grand central was jam packed with people. i've never seen so many people there - not even during rush hour. it was elbow room only in the main hall but i got on my train and even managed to snag a seat. despite the sense of urgency, there was order and people were trying to make light of the situation.

we have plenty of water, baby food and supplies so i think we're set. i'm really hoping this has just been all blown out of proportion. DH is on trauma call for the hospital so we're keeping our fingers crossed that people stay indoors and not do stupid things (like experiment with their chain saws). and now.... we wait. i was thinking i'd take an earthquake over this lame hurricane crap anyday - the preparation/waiting/anticipation is exhausting!!!

Morning, friends. Stay safe if you're in the hurricane's path.

Good luck to our weekend racers (Colleen and Tim)!

Low key weekend planned here. My back is still bothering me, so I'm going to put off a walk until Monday. Sundays are getting ready for the week days, so I'll be busy tomorrow. I'm going to make a new recipe today, so that should be fun.

Tonya - sorry the recovery process is the suck. Hang in there.

Missy - glad you are ready. Everyone in the storm's path - be safe.

Hard to believe there is such a huge storm over such a large part of the county. It is beautiful here. I got a good 9 hours of sleep (rather interrupted, but 9 hours horizontal is nothing to scoff at). I did 6 recovery miles on the trail with DH. My HR was supah low for the first mile (129 average!). That is unheard of for me. Unfortunately as we kept going, it rose up some. No surprise b/c I have been training like a wild woman and it was getting warm. BUT, it was a little disappointing b/c I of course want to see those number stay super low.

I have a bowling fundraiser, then will run another 4 recovery miles before I do some work and hit the hay early. DH has a show and the kids have a birthday sleepover, so I am on my own.

Well I'm back. I met up with teamates and we ran 5.5 road miles as a warm up. Then the race. I just don't run well in the humid weather. I've logged almost 600 miles in the summer heat and yet I still struggle in it and my teamates drop me like a bad habit. Oh well, I knew the course and they didn't. So, even though they dropped me and I was probably running in about 14th overall. I crossed the finish line in 7th because I didn't get lost. Oh well I'll take it. I did manage some sustained miles at my race Heart Rate of 167 bpm.

morning

Biking thing was super awesome last night but you know that biking around and drinking and then stopping at bars is not a good way to prepare for a tempo trail run...which i missed, because I was hung over. I still feel sick...blah. I am such a lightweight when it comes to drinking. It was so much fun though. I should be going to do my run alone in a bit. Not sure on the tempo part because I am still not feeling good.

Nice work Timr.

Puttered around the house too long this morning and paid for it in the last few miles of my run. 12 miles total, with 6 of those at 9:17 (average) pace. Ran out of water and it was about 85F so I took it nice and easy home. 2:05:50 in total. Longest I've run since the HM at Bayshore (memorial day weekend).

Missy - hopefully you won't get hit too bad with Irene, but wait until it hits, the show ma nature can put on will be very impressive.

Any hurricane updates? Sad to hear 4 have died - stay inside and away from windows to all of those of you affected.

I just logged my second recovery run today. 4 easy miles on the trail. It was warm (80) and the run followed a bowling event which included a pint of beer and fried cheese curds, but fortunately I remained unscathed from my misdeeds during the run. Legs feel good and it is supposed to be 50 degrees tomorrow. Woot! I am already looking forward to my long run! Is that craZy?

Brandy - I hope you are feeling better!

10 done. First time in double digits since GC in April.

I'm not convinced this heel lift is a good thing. My hips started to ache 1.5 miles in, and my quads were fried around mile 8. I've run halfs a full minute per mile faster pace wise on hilly courses and been less beat up than I am today. (Today was flat except for 1 small short incline.) I'll talk to chiro about it tomorrow.

Nice work, Kath. I hope you get the heel lift thing worked out. I thought more and more PTs lately have said you should generally have LESS heel lift??? I know each person is different, but I have heard that a lot in the last few months (okay 2-3 times), but still.....

What kind of phone did you get, Moe?

My long run done. In gorgeous weather, although it was almost 70 degrees when I finished. It was wicked hard, but I am glad I did it. 18 miles with 12 at goal marathon pace (7:49). The last couple of training cycles I have skipped MP miles in my long runs because: (1) they are the hardest darn workouts in my whole schedule IMHO; and (2) I repeatedly have heard that MP miles really don't provide much of a physiological benefit - just mental. So it has been fairly easy for me to say, I'm not going to do 18 with 12 MP miles, I'll do 20 or 21 and boost up my miles. Well I am glad I didn't today. For 2 reasons: (1) I could really use the mental benefit; and (2) as the temps/miles increased, my HR was at getting up to LT - which indeed DOES provide a physiological benefit. I guess it makes perfect sense. When you are in the middle of a heavy training week, your GMP miles are NOT going to be at your MP heart rate. For my first 6 miles, I was only 4-5 bpm ahead. Last 6, yeah, it was harder and I was at or very close to LT. So I did stopped a few times to get a drink and let the old ticker slow down.

This bumps me to 70.2 miles for the week.

10.65 miles were covered today. It was a GORGEOUS morning here. Starting temps were around 65 degrees and the humidity wasn't too bad. By far, the best running conditions I've seen in probably two months. Bummer for me was that I'd planned on 10-15, but at 10.65, I decided enough was enough. Hard to explain, but somehow I just knew that was enough. Legs were fried, but that's a constant thing these days. Maybe it was my body being pro-active, and realizing that with my being out and about for much of the day yesterday, hydration and rest were not properly covered for anything more today.

Ahh well. I guess a little cutback on the week's LR isn't a bad thing.

Hope everyone has fared well from Irene's wrath!

Are you guys watching whatever big track event is on today? Holy crap these guys are fast. Even Dh commented on how they are whipping past the scenery on the stands behind them.
Well, my right leg has been 1/2" or more shorter than my right (depending on how bad my back is doing) for the last month. The last vertibrae gets twisted, which throws my pelvis off and then I'm lopsided. Or something like that.

He only gave me a 3ml lift, which isn't even 1/4 inch, but wow. Definitely talking to chiro about it tomorrow.

18 miles with 12 speedy ones..... WOW.
