Who has thrown their name into the lottery?

Me? Not yet. I am almost certain I will within the next couple of days.

You?

I'm totally on the fence. I really don't think I'm up for a super-heavy training schedule in the first half of 2008 - that's what has me unsure. I still have a week after Javelina to get my entry in IIRC so I'm holding out until then.

I was thinking about this very topic today. It occurred to me that if I enter, I'll probably find some reason to be away from home the weekend of the lottery. Last year, when I was not entered but knew a bunch of people, I watched the lottery webcast all weekend. If I was entered, I couldn't stand to watch.

You think you can go 2 for 2, Tim?

I don't know. There are so many factors including race day weather. I think I know how to train to be better prepared. We shall see.

What's IIRC?

Does being a big Hoity Toity Ultra RD count towards the volunteering requirement?

I would like to run in 2009 or 2010, but I am not prepared to gamble with the lottery. I cannot afford to go next year, in case my name gets drawn. I don't think I'm ready to run the Sierra Nevadas in 2008.

Question: Last year was the first year with the new qualification standards. Does anyone think, over the next couple years, that the number of two-time losers will increase to the point that they will take up the majority of the open spots?

Good question. What were the qualifying times before last year? It seems to me that they need to make them tougher or that may end up happening.

I'm not sure. I already did my volunteer requirement at the North Country Trail Run. I worked the last aid station so I was out there all day.

There used to be age categories which now have been removed. For ages 39-and-under, the 50 mile qual was 9hrs (road) and 10hrs (trail.) More details at this link:

http://www.run100s.com/WS/wsqualify.txt

The standards for entry were relaxed, therefore more people are eligible. I'm not implying that there was a registration surge last year due to new standards. This is the second year under the new entry standards and over time I can only guess that more folks will enter. I imagine that the registration figures will tell the tale for future years.

When the time comes for me to enter, I hope it doesn't become a major PITA to get in this race.

I can see that being a problem. At the 50 miler on the Big M a huge majority qualify for WS. I think they will need to make the qualifying time tougher again. Then I will need to get faster.

Plus I think one estimate is that a 100 miler is 3 x's your 50 mile time. If that's true 11 hours is too long. People shouldn't do what I did and push cutoffs for close to 30 hours.

Yeah but, would you do it any other way?

Out of curiosity, what did you run North Country 50M in?

10:20. That still would have been a qualifier under the old standards.

Oh, I did the "pushing the cutoffs" drama for you - the viewer at home.

I wanted to keep it exciting. Otherwise how exciting is it to watch an X move across a screen?

Carrying that "X" was a biotch! I was impressed.

Me this year? No. I love Western & will eventually throw my name into the hat. Right now, I can only do so many destination races a year & my tick list hasn't been covered yet. I would go back to crew/pace in a heartbeat though.

I would take you up on it in a heart beat. You really were the best pacer I could have hoped for. Make up 2 minutes here, 3 minutes there, etc. That worked so well. Plus you got me through the whole cartilage drama.

I threw my name in the hat already, with my buddy. We are one time "losers"

I could care less either way. I am pretty much decided 100% to go back to the Tetons and do the 100 miler, so i will have my Western Mountain 100 miler either way

I think they should tighten up the qualifying, at least for the 50 mile part. I only say this now, after running 2 100 milers this year last year i got in on a 10:59 road 50 miler i have since done better on trails, but it got me in to the lottery last year.
