Opie's post for last week inspired me for this week's question. Since he reported his activity totals in terms of total time spent rather than miles or other quantitative units, I started thinking about all the time I spend in exercise-related activity, including pre- and post- workout stuff. Such as driving to and from my running locations, showering (sometimes before and after), digestive issues, etc. Maybe I focus too much on the pragmatic and efficiency aspects of my activities, but I tend to wonder if the 30 minute run is really worth the 2+ hours of pre- and post- "work" that sometimes happens. Or maybe I just have way too much free time to burn... ;)

So this week's question is (thanks BTY!): how do you feel about your bang-for-your-buck of your running vs pre/post maintenance of said running?

Hi OM. I can empathize. But I'm very fortunate in that my office has a shower and locker room facility, and I just run across a brand new pedestrian bridge in order to get to one of the most popular running trails in the downtown Albany area, so I can fit my whole running routine into my lunch break. Sometimes I go a little long and just stay longer in the evening to make up for it. I also have great roads for running & cycling near my house, and I live 2.5 miles from the high school track, so I either have a manageable run to get there or a very short car ride. So in answer to the question, yes, I get a lot of bang for my commitment buck.

Missed my run Monday due to other commitments, so will wind up a few miles short of a full schedule. But I'm shifting gears this week by adding some (at least one more than before) quality runs to the menu. Today is my first tempo run since long ago and far away.

Thursday - Edited to change my plans for today. I woke up and stretcheds & did my core work for the day, and also decided another tempo run made more sense than a 7 mile medium long run this close to Saturday's long run.

Monday............................5.0, stretch, core (abs)......................0, per plan.

Tuesday...........................6.0 tempo, stretch, core (hips)............6.0, per plan

Wednesday......................4.0 recovery, stretch, core (abs)..........4.0, per plan.

Thursday..........................7.0 Mid-Week Middle-Long, stretch.....

..........................6.0 tempo, stretch, core (hips)............6.0, per plan

Friday..............................5.0 easy running, stretch, core (hips)...5.0 per plan

Saturday..........................13 long, stretch, core (abs) optional......14.0

Sunday............................0 Adjust as needed.............................0

Total Plan.....35 miles, stretch 6 days, 4/5 days core (2/3abs / 2hips)

Execution.....35 miles, stretch 5 days, 4 days core (2 abs / 2 hips)

Sometimes the rest of life just gets in the way!

I understand what you mean, OM. Like BTY, I have a great facility available here at work, complete with a nice gym. I try to optimize my running time before/after work, but it's just so easy to get side tracked into chats with friends, doing a couple of extra strength exercises, reading the paper, that a 4-5 mile run easily turns into a 1.5 to 2 hr commitment. Solo runs on the weekend are much easier.. get dressed, run, stretch, shower, done. But my favourite time wasters are the occasional Saturday social long runs..... going for coffee with a training partner, or sitting in the river after a nice long trail run with the group, tossing back a beer!

This week is a cutback.

M........... core........... abs/core/hips etc.

T............ 6 .............. 6.2

W............5-6 ............ 6

T............ core

F............ 4-5

S............ 12

S............ rest/yoga

Well it threw me off since it now says "X-training" instead of just "weekly" Since I don't do much besides run, I think I stumbled into the wrong group. I'm a planner though if that qualifies for anything! My plan for this week is just to get through it....eating too much sugar and feeling way too tired..it's my own fault I'm such a wreck.

Running in the winter definitely stretches the "bang for your buck" thing for me. If I'm going to take all that time to get layered up, then I'm going out for at least 5-6 miles and/or some hills or something I can't easily do on the treadmill. It gets real easy to just say, "I don't feel like getting all that crap stuff out and on so I'll just slip downstairs to run on the 'mill." I've gotten pretty quick at the post-run rinse most days though. In the summer, it's great... just pull on shorts, top and shoes and off I go!

Thanks, OM

Sorry for my absinthe last week.

Bang-u4-Buck good question.

When you're running for only a half-hour it does seem like there's a lot of overhead in pre- and post-staging, but think its just the nature of the beast.

I have gotten more efficient over the years but those short runs are crucial for maintaining.

For me, the maintenance is just the cost of doing business. I try to keep it to a minimum.
