Thanks for keeping us going for the last 2 weeks, HappyFeat!

I've been wondering these days about motivation. What is it that keeps you going when the going gets tough? When you're feeling fatigued and don't want to get out the door? When you know it's going to be a lousy run and you need to get in the miles?

What gets you through the rough patches and on to bigger and better?

My plan for this week.......

M........ 7..................... 7.5

F......... core ............... core

S........ 14 ................... 14

S........ rest .................. check

A good dose of OCD usually does it for me.

Actually, I'm driven by the miles per week thing, the lost ground in training thing, and the pounds gained on the scale thing. That being said, when I really need to back off and skip a run (or two, or three, or four) because of illness or injury, I'm able to do so. Grudgingly. But then again, I rarely take a rest day. If I don't run, I usually cross train. It's rare that I don't do anything.

Monday: 4.2 easy miles after work, .33 mile walk c/d

Tuesday: 6 miles at a brisk 8:08 pace

Wednesday: 22:05 on the elliptical (2.9 miles) and half mile walk at lunch, run home from work for 9 hilly miles @ 8:09 avg

Thursday: Another 2.9 miles on the elliptical (22:03) and upper body weights, tough 5.1 mile sweatfest run on the treadmill and half mile walk

Friday: 2.7 miles elliptical (21:05) and abs/core, 5.1 mile tempo run after work

Saturday: 10.1 miles run @ 8:07 avg pace

Sunday: 15.2 mile long run @ 8:06 avg, .7 mile walk, then .2 on the treadmill later to check tension and calibration (it's great!)

Totals: 55.1 miles run, 8.5 miles elliptical, 2.8 miles walked and 35 minutes weights/abs

Thanks Heme, and also HappyFeat for the previous couple weeks.

I think what motivates me to go run is remembering how good it feels when I do run. I try to practice selective memory by only remembering the good runs, or even just the good moments within a not-so-good run. As I tend to say, it's all about how you spin it that matters.

I may actually have a plan to my running this week! We'll see how that works out.

day

plan

actual

Monday

recovery-paced MLR, yoga PM

9 miles (10:37 pace), 90 minute yoga class

Tuesday

preview course for Saturday's 5k

nope, ran 7 with a friend instead, tons of quad stretching

Wednesday

rest/yoga/elliptical

5.4 miles walking, 3.5 miles (30 min) elliptical

Thursday

AM yoga, PM run w/the ladies

4 miles AM, 6.45 miles PM

Friday

EZ medium run

6.25 miles (10:31 pace) -- since this and Thursday's runs were within 20 hours of each other, that substituted for Sunday's planned triple

Saturday

5k race

5k race (26:48 PR!), 8 miles in total for the day

Sunday

trifecta: 6, 4, 4

rest!

To answer your question, I'd have to second what OM said - I remind myself how good it feels to run. Some of my best runs have been on days I thought I had as much energy as a wet noodle. So much of what holds us back is mental, even though it can feel like it's physical. I always give it a go anyway just in case I feel better - and I usually do. Besides all that, a strong motivation for me is that my run is my time to do what I want, my choice, my happiness. So much of the day I'm doing what someone else wants or that I'm obligated to do like working. My run after work is my time to be free from external constraints and I don't relinquish that easily.

When I was running well (minimal injuries), I might have needed motivation occasionally. Now, coming back from minor injuries, I feel so good when I am able to do what I set out to do, mileage- or pace-wise, and see improvement week to week. And then there's having to lay out the actual runs to all of you on the Weekly.

M 5 M on TM

T volleyball

W 5 M on TM with 2 @ tempo pace (feeliing effects of a cold)

T 5 M plus volleyball

F rest

S 11 M with 4.5 on TM

S 5.5 M when I should have rested my knee. Time for ice.

Total: 31.5 M

Hi Heme - Thanks for taking on the week.

I guess I've been running for long enough now that I know that whatever the reason is for a lousy run, it's probably a pretty good one; if I need a break, I take one. If I need to push myself over a hump (this iusn't usually the case), I can sense that. The hardest time I've had in running came about three years ago, when I seemed to be getting slower at short race distances, so I had to change my mindset from "trying to get faster" to "trying to get slower more slowly". As it turned out, it was just a trough, and I've been running my fastest times at almost all distances since about 6 months after that trough. So I'm emotionally prepared for that phase of my life when it does eventuially get here, but in the meantime, I'm loving these days.
