thanks Erika for last weeks tally and question of the week. I wasn't sure if I would come up with a question or not but since most of you seem to enjoy answering them I will give it a go. And in keeping with the festivities of the season which candidate would you most like to run with hmmm better not go there, let me try that again. What was your scariest running moment or experience?
Thanks, Patrick! I've got my last week all tallied up now, sorry I forgot to do that!

I'd have to say it's a toss up between cars and dogs. I've almost been hit a couple of times by cars, and several "close calls," but I have to say having a snarling dog come tearing down a driveway or across a yard toward me is a terrifying experience. I love dogs, but a dog feeling protective and aggressive is a very scary thing.

This week is last taper week before my race, and I don't think I'll be running much between work, travel and socializing with friends!

Monday: 3.5 miles run, easy pace but hard feeling effort on the TM, .5 mile walk

Tuesday: 3.5 miles run, .5 mile walk

Wednesday: Travel day

Thursday: 4.2 mile progressive pace run on the TM, .5 mile walk (run with irunmike didn't work out, but spent the day with other Kicksters)

Friday: Rest Day, walked all over Boston

Saturday: a 5k with ProFromDover, 8:35 average, or thereabouts. Drive to Manchester

Sunday: Manchester City Marathon, 26.2 miles in 3:41:51

Totals: 40.6 miles running, 1.5+ miles walking

ETA: Dove, that's my worst fear! Not only having myself attacked by one of those dogs, but my dog as well. I don't have a dog now, but there were a couple of "tense moments" when I took Cheyenne out in years past and aggressive dogs made a move on her. Scary stuff!

hi patrick, good question. haven't had any scary running experiences, weird. maybe that's why i run... it makes me too stupid to be properly scared. i've turned around and growled at and chased pesky dogs. i've pounded on the sides and hoods of cars that have nearly hit me, and flipped off drivers that throw stuff at me. then there's that cyclist's flag that i broke a couple of weeks ago when he nearly swiped me. hmmm, maybe i'm just not being properly worried about the consequences.

finished off one hard month of marathon training, and i've got two more ahead. let's get at it:

Most scary was when me and my two terriers were attacked by a pitbull and a rottie while on a trail run. The pitbull almost killed one of my dogs (he was bleeding massively) and torn up my arm. the worst part was carrying my wounded dog back to the trail head. I was sure the elderly lady that owned the other dogs would lose control and the pitbull would come charging down the trail after us. My dog ended up in the hospital for a week, and I had to go to the ER for stiches. Dog number 2 was OK.

Thanks Patrick for taking care of this week, and thank you Erika for last.

Other than the normal urban hazards (cars, bikes, dogs, gang members, etc), I can't really think of any thing that scared me too much. The most fearful I've ever been while running was during a 10K race when I blacked out after cresting a tough hill. I knew it was due to a blood pressure drop, and I was worried that when I stopped at the end of the race, I would black out again. I was able to control the situation well enough so I only was dizzy at the finish, but I was still a rather tense moment for me.

M - 7 miles...Actual: 7 miles at 7:21/mi

Tu - 5 miles...Actual: 5 miles at 7:01/mi + 1 mile barefoot

Sa - tailgating

Su - 14 easy (this may get moved to Friday depending on the weather)...Actual: leaf raking in the rain

Thank you Patrick (for taking on this week and next week!), and erika for last week. I really appreciate that we are taking turns handling the weekly and keeping it going without any one person burning out.

I can't think of anything that was terribly scary - at least nothing like some of the stories shared already! the occassional dog that comes out to the street, but fortunately, {knock on wood}, they've been friendly greetings, even though they didn't start out feeling that way.

Patrick, thanks for taking on the Weekly thread.

What was your scariest running moment or experience? It could be injury, dog, weather, bike, auto or other. And what did you learn from the experience?

I am going to go off the board with "other" and make a deft segue from last week's thread. I was running at lunch time along the trail that goes along the Hudson River. The trail is separated from the city by a busy Interstate. During the coldest day that I've ever tried to go running (I'll have to go back and check my log for the stats), I was about a mile from the building, coming back "in", when I started to fall asleep on my feet. While I didn't feel cold, as I was pretty well covered from stem to stern, I must have been breathing in air that was not sufficiently warmed, and was apparently approaching hypothermia. That would have been an especially bad thing to happen that day, as I was the only idiot out running or walking, and the highway is elevated at the point where I may have gone down, and it would have been a while before anyone found my sorry frozen carcass. I think the wind must have been blowing my expired air so that what I was inspiring was not getting warmed. Sounds good anyway. But I did not, in fact, die that day. But I learned that I shouldn't go out running when it's so cold, or hot, for that matter, that I'm the only person around, because any number of things could happen that would require another person around to help me.

I have a race this coming Sunday, but sem to have broken my yittle toe. Waiting to make a decision about racing until the last possible minute.

Thanks for taking this on, Patrick. My tally is up for last week, pathetic as it is.

What scares me? Not a lot.... I'm on trails most of the time, so traffic usually isn't an issue. Like BTY, I do worry about falling and hitting my head on a tree or something when nobody's around, which is why I always carry a phone, whistle and RoadID. But a large dog charging down a driveway at me can sure get my adrenaline going! I was brought to a halt by a pack of 4-5 German shepards once....... they wound up only wanting a group scratch, but for a few seconds I thought I was a gonner.

Opie, go for it.

BTY, don't.

Thanks, Patrick. Dogs have gotten my "fight or flight" juices flowing, as others have mentioned. I've never been bitten, although I have running friends who weren't so lucky. I have been known to scare myself as I yell "Go Home!" at the top of my lungs and reach for a rock (or pretend rock). Even scarier are the owners who turn out to be unable to control their little darlings. Also scary was the time I went down when I hit an icy patch. And the buckled sidewalk. No car or bike incidents (yet).

Thanks Patrick. Used to be, just getting out the door with the prospect of a long run looming ahead of me was scary enough! I think I'm getting past that now.
