Had a nice run on the road in the 'hood. The corn is mostly gone and the trees are just starting to hint at changing, which is so pretty. Perfect fall day.

I joined a few folks for the first pre-run of the Mountain Masochist course (the front half). It has more climbing than I expected. I'm very glad I went to get the feel for the course and meet a few folks -- all of who were quite friendly -- I may see on race day (at least before the tear off into the woods!) The long downhills on the gravel roads were killing my feet. I need to work out a plan for that.

Given my soreness this morning it's clear that my attempts at hill running here in flat-land are still sub-par. Hopefully the very slow 9 mile recovery run will speed things along.

Leaves are nearly at their height of color here in NEPA, and we had our first frost this morning. Things warmed up into a nice sunny fall day though, and I did an hour on the trails with my sister while my nephews played tennis in the lower park.

Extreme? Extremely sad that I'm not running on such a glorious weekend... But, perhaps it really is a tad too warm to be truly glorious?

ART/DC shot x-rays of my snapped hoof on Saturday... At least one obvious metatarsal fracture. Films going out to radiologist...

Guess next weekend's 50K will be an opportunity to volunteer!!

I hit the trails for the first time in months and loved every minute of it! 8 miles on the Stone Steps course. I signed up for Tecumseh and then a 50K in Va Beach two weeks later. Let the trail training begin!

Buzzie - Ugh! Sorry to hear about the foot. I don't suppose there is an easy fix? Can you do something like elliptical or cycling?

1Topodope -- I hope to hit that VA Beach 50K as well (I assume you mean Seashore Nature Trail). I ran it last year in the rain (nor'easter maybe? -- my first 50K. Hopefully this year will be a bit less wet. I should probably sign up before it fills up.

Last weekend was my last big weekend before taper time so I spent both days on the trails and had some great runs. Cranked out 16 at my home trail in 3:23 when it usually takes me a good 4 hours. I had planned 4 hours so I walked another couple of miles for my VRAA team. Then on Saturday I drove down to the site of the 50K I am running in 3 weeks at Dogwood Canyon in Lampe, MO. We were able to get out on the trail though it wasn’t much of the actual course, only about 3 miles. The rest was a trail they keep open for regular visitors but not really part of the course. However, I got a really good idea of the short, steep hills (and lots of them) that I’m going to face on race day…and I was the only one in our training group to run the “big” hill of the day…about 0.8 miles with 400ft elevation change, 8 miles into the run. Everyone else hiked it. It wasn’t fast but I ran it—ran that mile in 12:39. I ended up with 2 miles that the group hiked together in just over 30 minutes and a 9 mile run in 1:44. I feel like I’m heading into taper time on a pretty high note, which I’m very pleased about. And getting even a small glimpse of the course and being able to run that hill put my mind to rest a bit on whether or not I’m going to be able to finish it under the time limit.

Nice pictures Mobius. I wish I had brought my camera on my run today. The foliage is a bit past peak but stlll beautiful. No run Saturday. Worked all day then crashed after work from lack of sleep. Sunday I did a 14.28 mile loop with 1168' of vertical, 60% dirt roads, 40% paved. I'm intentionally running at a slower training pace on these medium distance runs and long runs, trying to emulate a 50 mile pace in prep for my first 50 on 11/20. Today, despite the big hills I felt like I could have kept going at the end. A good sign I guess.

New River Trail 50k in Fries VA. WOW!! Had an awesome time in beautiful weather. Took some pictures with my phone but they came out crappy, so I will have to steal somebody elses

Really enjoyed the trail - dead flat, gorgeous scenery, and a wonderfully organized event - Annette Bednosky and the park service did a great job putting everything together. Homemade bread on the PB&J's, home baked brownies, cookies etc etc.... how cool is that???!!

My job was to pace my friend through her first 50k finish, and beat the 7hr cut off. She did great - was struggling between 20-25 a little bit, but Jimbo managed the clock perfectly (even though I say it myself) and we crossed the line with 7 minutes to spare.

This one is a keeper - look forward to running this one next year too.

Mobius - Sadly, no easy fix; just more time off to let it heal. Will know more later this week - hoping it's not any worse than we think it is. Meanwhile, I'll continue the non-weight-bearing cross-training...

Had a few shorter (50K-ish) races planned through the end of the year - was looking forward to the opportunity to go "fast" for a change... But, no big loss.

Just missing the trails - especially with the change of seasons.

On Saturday I did a five hour run along the Rideau Trail and some back country roads. It ended up being quite a short run, since the trail isn't exceptionally well marked or maintained. But it was great weather for a long run.

Yes, that is the one. I grew up in Va Beach and will be in town visiting family for the holidays. It was too good to pass up. Fingers crossed for better weather!
