So, for the third year in a row, I f-ed up the dates for the Show Me State Games. Ran "long" (sorry, Theia, but it was only 5 miles) yesterday because I was going to volunteer at the SMSG this morning, and I get to the race and it's deserted. Came back home and realized the race isn't until tomorrow morning. So, I can't run because it's late, hot, and my breakfast will take forever to settle, but I don't want to go back to sleep since I'm dressed and have to go pick up my CSA stuff in a couple of hours. AND, I don't get to sleep in tomorrow either because I have to get up for the race. Crap, crap, crap, crap, crap. I guess I'll tidy around the house. What a dork!

Brutal brutal brutal. The first hour wasn't bad (out the door by 6) but the minute that sun was up?? Holleeee cats. I just couldn't get comfy, couldn't get my groove, could get hydrated, yada yada. At 13 really struggling and my imaginary nay-sayer, Mr. Bitterness, showed up to tell me that I sucked an my mother dresses me funny, 13 is probably fine, I was tired, didn't need to train that that hard...I was able to tell him to hush and keep distracted until 15.3...then stopped for more water and was just DONE.

Literally staggered the .7 home. Just a bad day. I was hoping for better, but it's OK.

Get this...there was a woman running at 8 AM with 90% humidity and already 75++ degrees and she was wearing yoga PANTS to run in. I literally said aloud "PANTS??????????"

On a happy note, there is this little puttery cheery elderly man I usually see on Sat and this morning he said, "My aren't you impressive?" Well, you are impressive to, Mr., with your charming 85 year old personality that hasn't let life wear you down and still out walking! Yay!

(Reminds me how truly little it takes to make someone's day)

hey all. been ridiclously busy so my play time has been minimal. well, other than hopping on the boat yesterday to pull traps (we pulled up 3 X 2.5+ pounders...awesome!). they complimented the other 5 pound to 1.5-pounders very nicely. the plan was go to all the way out to jeffries ledge (18 miles out) and pick up some haddock and cod but we had my cousin's IL's on board and the seas started to turn up a bit. we made the executive decision to stick close to shore and waste bait instead. meh, not my call.

my running this week?

mon: 9 mi w/10 X 100 yd+ strides

tue/wed/thur/fri = 0

i shut it down after i woke up on tuesday with a gnarled up groin/hammy/glute/hip - whatever it was (i taint smiling about it either). hopefully this little rest will help reset whatever was wrong. so, i'm bagging my plans for an october marathon and figured i'd focus on getting in shape for RTB (probably a 22/24 mile leg) and maybe even sign up for the spartan race at the end of august (a qualifying race for the you-will-die race next year). i better start practicing my mud crawling, log splitting, barb wire leaping, fire jumping, spear throwing and memorization techniques.

it sure is hotter than a snake's ass today so it looks like i'm taking dd to the lake so she can complain about how she doesn't want to go in the water. this can't be my child if she's adverse to H2O...

good racing & fitnessing to you all. stay hydrated.

sorry i have been MIA lately. i haven't had the chance to catch up entirely on the week's thread so i hope you're all well.

cheers

On my run I saw 2 elderly men out for a power walk with their canes and wide brim straw hats. They were having a nice chat as they walked along. Made me smile, cause I can see me doing that with either my sister or Kelly when we're 95.

Hey kids!

8 miles done this morning with MrJenRuns and Suunta!!!!! He's never gone that far before. We started out in the 8:50's and ended around 8:00, averaged right around 8:30. He did great, he will probably beat me when I finally start running/racing 5k's in a month or so again. The weather up here has been pretty spot on, 55* when we left and probably around 65/70 now. It is pretty humid, though.

Great long runs from you guys already, good job dealing with the heat. Hydrate!!!

Good luck to the racers and special good luck to Duckie, I'm sending strong sub-90 vibes out that way!!!

Hey guys. My 5k is complete, and I'd say it was a success. And it was easily my most profitable race ever. (Read on).

Yeah, it was hot. But not insanely so, like I was afraid it would be. They were saying the air temp was 85, and it was probably a little over 90 on the tarmac. It could have been worse.

I started out too fast: I was at about a 6:25 pace for the first half mile. Oops. I slowed a bit and eventually settled into about a 6:45 groove. I started to tire in the third mile, but I think I held it together reasonably well. My PR coming into this was 20:58. The last 5k I did a couple months ago was 21:00. Today I crossed the finish line at 20:59 on my watch. I think I might have peaked. But I'll take it.

Now comes the profitable part. This race is renowned for giving away tons of prizes. First of all, every finisher gets a little card as they cross the finish line which they can exchange for a prize. Most of the prizes are rather shitty, but I actually got a decent one: A gift basket full of Paula Deen baking materials. Not exactly up my alley, but my wife will love it.

A little while later, they posted the results. Out of 800+ finishers, I came in exactly 100th overall. I'm quite happy with that! They listed my time as 21:02, which is 3 seconds slower than my watch, but whatever. And maybe that's gun time, so perhaps the chip time will reduce that a wee bit. But most surprisingly, I came in 3rd in my Age Group! With 99 people ahead of me, I'm shocked only 2 of them were M35-39. I saw that there were guys in their 40 and even 50s who finished ahead of me but didn't get an AG award. I guess all the fast M35-39s stayed home today...

As it turns out, one of the guys ahead of me was actually in the top three overall, so I got the prize for 2nd in my AG. This is the third time I've won an AG award, and all of them have been for 2nd place. Kinda weird. But for the first time, I actually got something other than just a cheapo medal: I got a gift certificate for $10 off something from New Balance. While that won't pay the mortgage bill next month, it's still kinda cool.

But the best was yet to come. This race has a random prize drawing at the end of the day, where they give out anything and everything. They had gift certificates to local restaurants, certificates for free personal training sessions, an iPod, and the grand prize was a treadmill. Well, I ended up getting my bib number called, and I won a free pair of shoes from Road Runner Sports (which is where I get my shoes now)!

So for my $25 entry fee (or whatever it was) I got the Paula Deen basket, the $10 New Balance coupon, and a free pair of shoes. And a shiny new medal to hang on my wall as well. Not a bad haul for one morning!

Special thanks, Jen!

The only limiting factor right now is my right ankle which seems to be deteriorating a bit this summer. It started when I damaged my Peroneus longus/brevis tendons last year and now I think I've strained my Achilles tendon over time as it seems to have taken on some of the burden of stabilization. If I can get through this month I'll give it all some rest during August and maybe seek treatment.

Stay cool, peeps!
