Greetings, all. I'm going to head out for an undetermined number of miles in town. Could be 5. Could be 10. Will figure it out when I get there, and pack accordingly.

Be safe outside folks. It's getting COLD! Brr.

Morning Gang -

Hi Ailarie and Bob and Kath.

I may run something a little later, once the roads are plowed. We have 9 inches of fresh snow. It's supposed to get bitterly cold Monday for several days. Just in time for the start of my Little Rock training!

Did anyone read the article "Way of the Renegades" in the January RW issue, about the Hansons-Brooks Distance Project, less-is-more theory? Long run in the 18 week marathon training plan peaks at 16 miles. But it's high weekly mileage with MP run every week and intervals every week. Theory sounds super interesting to me. I'd be nervous to try it, with a LR of only 16 miles, but I may consider it for a fall marathon. Anyone know anyone who has tried it?

Good runs to all!

I feel fine right now, I can feel most of my leg ! I won't run until later today since last night was a late night and it won't be much. I feel really good about that race, it was easy effort wise and fairly pain free. I haven't had a run like that in months and months and months.

Have fun in the snow, I can't even imagine it!

I can't help you with the Hanson-Brooks training, but I am doing a less (and much more intense) program for my Tri training this year. The Time-Crunched Triathlete.

thanks for the warm & fuzzies everyone. the procedure went as well as can be expected, in and out pretty quick. i don't remember much of my conversation with the doc post-surgery because i was still locked in the grips of the general anesthetic. from what i gathered he did the synovectomy (thankfully he got the right 'ectomy') - basically removing the sac that contains the fluid from my knee, looked under the kneecap and saw a lot of bone (not good b/c that means more arthritis) and poked around a little more. i don't remember much else than that. i did stop for a monster chicken burrito on the way home...i was so hungry my a$$hole was eating my underwear. i wasn't supposed to eat anything after midnight or drink anything after 8AM so i was pretty empty. i don't even remember eating it.

no clue what the long term plan/prognosis is but i have my PT all lined up for the next 3 weeks and already had my first visit. she was happy with the lack of swelling, the amount of flexibility i still had and the slight quivering i was able to generate in my quad. i can't lift my foot off the floor although i can sort of walk around fairly well. lots of ice and compression...

anyway...

jen, congrats on the 5k. i hope to give a sub-20 a shot sometime.

goon - wow, i hope the ear exercises and meds kick in TODAY. heal up!

rftl, sounds like a tough winter already out there in MN. RW had published a 3-day plan printed a year or two ago as well. i'll have to read the hanson article.

we're back in november now?

Cindi: the Hanson's moderate-consistent stuff has been around for awhile. There is an episode of the podcast Phedippidations (epidsode 76, you can find it on itunes). Just like any other plan/philosophy you'll probably have success with it if you stick to it. I think the challenge, just like the Furman stuff, lies in that a significant portions of your runs will be "challenging".

5 miles this morning for me. The new Nike jacket I picked up on sale this fall totally rocks.

Morning all,

Great morning of racing this morning, not for me, but for my daughter. This morning was the 5K that she's been training for. It was her race debut and she did great. It was a bit of a struggle at times durning the race, but she ran a strong 29:45 and recieved the 2nd place trophy in her AG for that. My wife took some pics, I'll post one later.

Good running to all.

2oh - glad to hear that it went well.

Great job all getting out there in the cold and/or snow. I may get in a long run for the first time in a long time tomorrow morning, we'll see. there's an organized run one lap of the Mercedes cours at 6:30 am.

5 miles done in the snowy/cold post-storm weather. I got shouts of "you're crazy", "you're nuts", "you're ambitious" and "run a bit for me" from people who were out shoveling and snowblowing. It was fun!

That is so awesome about DD TimR! Congrats to her! Isn't it fun to see them excited about running? How long did she train for it?

Jeez Dan, glad they removed the right sac! Healing vibes to you.

How do you feel BigG? Are you doing the exercises?

I'm off to a candy-cane-martini party. Yipee!

We started training for it back in August. Nothing too strenuous, but about 1 mile at a time a couple of times a week. Then when the fall rolled around, she had 1.5 hrs of soccer practice on Tues & Thursday night, plus games on Saturday. We supplemented that with a run on Sunday evening of about 1.5 - 2 miles. Then after soccer was over, we went to our track and did run/walk laps and worked up to 3 miles last Sunday. Great success.

Yah for TimDH! Woohoo!

10 done this morning. Ended up with a lot of stops (see fun thread) with happenings for the local Christmas parade. I don't care though. I had fun!

I do, however want to get some opinions from you guys. I need to really work on more core stuff rather than just crunches / oblique work. Especially for lower back, as I can feel that area being stressed at the end of LR's. If you could pick ONE lower back exercise to suggest, what would it be? Thanks in advance! :)

Good luck tomorrow, Maria!

I did not fitness today. Instead, I drove to meet my dad. He's been having a tough time lately. It was awesome to spend the morning with him and help him decide that yes, it's ok to adopt this little cutie:

Meet Roxie!

My dad was happier holding her than I've seen him in a long time. I can't wait until the 23rd when she comes to live with him.

Evening all! I ended up sleeping in a bit today and then doing a bunch of stuff around the apt before getting out for a run. Headed to the park for the big loop + a loop of the reservoir. Ended up with 8.9 miles in some pretty chilly temps with plenty of windy spots.

OMG, Roxie is sooooooo cute!!! Lora, I hope she brings tons of joy to dad!!

Big conga-rats to Tim's DD!

Jen - fantastic job on the 5K! Must feel great to keep it sub-20 and know you have more in the tank, and be in the midst of a comeback

Whoa Cindi... candy cane martini sounds divine! Have fun.

Ailarie - you'll get a lot of bang for your buck and of course for your core (and thus lower back) by doing planks. I love them!

Dan - thanks for the check-in, glad to hear you've already been to PT and good luck nursing the knee back to health. We can have Cap't Hot Quads outta the game for too much longer

Morning all! Decided yesterday that today's 10K wouldn't even be a fitness test, with cold temps predicted, a decent wind & not eating a whole lot in the last two days I didn't want to set myself up for a crap race. Good thing too b/c it was pretty dang cold this morning and I didn't get much of a pre-race warm-up in either + the most awful thing happened right before the start... this guy right alongside the starting corrals collapsed (non-runner) as the National anthem is being sung. Runners flock around him, 911 was called, the local medics on site were called but in the meantime calls for a doctor were out over all the runners. Many doctors and nurses ran over, started performing CPR, etc. but I just stood there feeling helpless as this guy laid on the ground motionless. Man, that sticks with you for a bit. In the meantime the 10K had started and I ran it as a progression... all at very comfortables paces, never faster than 8:20. The cooler weather was a non-issue while running but man I get soooooo cold right after stopping. Fought through shivers while waiting for the subway home. Warming up now, might get to yoga later and may also get back outside for some more miles later. Also hoping to search around to see if I can find out what happened to that guy.
