Finished - Yay!

After two recent (not-so-sucessful) attempts in 50 mile races this year, I finished the Tahoe Rim Trail 50 :)

Can't say enough about the race, tough climbs, quad burning descents, all around the stunning scenery around Tahoe.

I managed a shot of Jamiesons at mile 8, two more at mile 40, and a beer after the longest most brutal climb I have ever done.

So the plan was to finish alive with a smile and get lots of pictures. Mission accomplished.

I did some running up at the Cuyahoga Valley National Park on Friday late morning/early afternoon ...ran the out and back from Boston Store to Pine Lane and then went to get lunch and set up my hotel for the night ... I was happy that roots and his partner in charge of the Buckeye Trai 50k said I could help mark trails and work an aid station on Saturday even though I didn't inquire till Wednesday! I met up with roots and his friends back at Boston Store at about 4 p.m. and then we split into groups to mark, I got to help roots on a few sections ... it got really interesting on the longer section when he donned a backpack filled with wooden stakes armed with a hammer and staple gun - weirdest running gear EVAH! I carried the signs :) We estimated about 6 miles on our legs - so I got about 14 or so in on trails Friday *cool*

I also got to help out near the start on Saturday morning by heading up the road a bit to make sure the runners didn't miss the first turn ... I got in about 2 miles running back and forth before the race ... made sure they all headed the right direction and then headed to Pine Lane to help set up the AS and then was able to stay till they tore down at noon ... it was a HOT one out there ... and we were in a parking lot with no shade aside from the tent we set up ... I didn't stay in the tent, looked at it as heat training, lol ... had a GREAT time helping the runners out ... truly do enjoy volunteering at these events!

I had to take off after tearing down and didn't get to see the finish line or hang out with my friends that ran ... I had to drive the 2 hours home and get ready for work *sigh*

no run on Sunday ... hubby and I are planning his first ever 20 miler tomorrow ... running from our house to Pleasant Hill Dam (the dam on the Mohican 100/50 trail course) ... should be FUN ;-)

Sounds like you had a great weekend!

I misread wooden stakes as wooden skates - and wholeheartedly agreed that it was the weirdest running gear EVAH! Then, I re-read it... it's still flippin weird.

Looking forward to running Boston Store to Pine Lane myself in a couple (eek! less than two) weeks.

Speaking of which - I'm back to running...

My extreme weekend included no ultras or trails, but 2mi on Sat and 5mi on Sun (and a bunch of staking skating) - all pain free!!

(There's still a bit of lingering pain that shows up at times in day-to-day stuff... keeping me cautious; but, still, optimistic about making the starting line.)

Zoe has had some allergic reaction and between that and being sleep deprived from crewing and pacing at Badwater, i bailed on my run yesterday. i could barely muster up the energy to play with Zoe outside :( gotta really get my act together, i have a 100 miler in 2 months!

buzzie ... so glad you seem to be on the mend .... I "might" see you at BR100 in a couple weeks ... I will likely sign on to volunteer in some capacity ... even though that'll mean traveling/gas expenses 3 weekends in a row when I'm supposed to be penny pinching! *me = bad*

It'd be great to see you there - a friendly face at mile heaven-knows-what! (Of course, I totally understand about the time and expense - so much fun to be had, so little of both.)

Great photos Jim! That hill looks like pure evil. Was it full sun the whole way?

6 hours in the sun sounds brutal to me. Congrats crunningman!

Congrats on the finish Sherpa John. Any finish sounds very solid given the minimal recovery time.

Myself: I ran 10 miles on Saturday morning with the local group. Sunday was a sprint tri -- my first this season. I had a lot of fun and set a PR for the course. Report online here: http://www.macluskie.com/reports/2010/3sports2010/index.html

Next week I should be back to bigger run miles again. I'm hatching a plan for the weekend.

Got out at 6 a.m. to the state park and ran 16 miles...it was 4 hours of the most evenly paced run I've done out there yet. I didn't fade at all, which is what usually happens as the sun gets higher and it gets warmer. I ran with a friend who is training for Leadville 100...unfortunately for him it was the first 16 of his 40 when he wanted to be out there a couple hours before I was and get some of his run done before I got there...it was in the 90's when I was done and got hotter over the course of the day. I felt really good for my run, like I could have run more, and it was awesome not to be by myself, but I didn't need to run any more than that and didn't want to risk injury, especially coming off a fairly tough race the previous weekend and going into another one. I hope that doesn't make me a crappy friend but I did check in with him the rest of the day to make sure he was okay.

Mobius - we had the sun most of the day (there were a few forest areas) - I honestly did ok in it - I have plenty of heat training in the NC summer, plus some Badwater crewing earlier in the week really helped. A lot of people suffered though - it was carnage at one particular aid station. It was about 90F at the peak (but it was a dry heat lol).

Congrats to crunningman and SJ :)
