Took my broken-footed self to Vulture Bait Trail Race - 25K or 50K; one or two laps around the Fanshawe Reservoir in London, Ontario.

Unable to run, I volunteered instead.

Spent six hours, by myself, standing on a corner marshalling a sporadic stream of runners (esp. by lap two) as they popped out of the woods and rounded the corner onto a busy road to cross the bridge to the other side of the reservoir.

On the second lap, I cheered every one of those few 50K runners as they emerged from the woods - most of them running alone. Then, cheered them on again as they reached me at the road. Felt like a fool woo-hoo-ing and waving my arms in the air; but, I think at least a few appreciated it.

So, I've been lurking on the board for a couple of years now, posting now and then, but I finally feel (somewhat) worthy. I finished my first Ultra this weekend! I ran 32 miles in the 6-hour race at the St. Pat's 24 in South Bend, Indiana. I got to run one lap with Senator Brett, who ran the 24-hour race (or at least more than I did). It was a great race, very small but well-run. Beautiful course, beautiful day (about 35 at the start, and warmed up to the mid-60's).

I led the 6-hour race until about the 4:45 mark (27 miles) when I got 'chicked.' The young lady who eventually won pushed past me at a pace I just couldn't sustain. I was able to regroup and start running again, but she finished a mile ahead of me, and I held on for 2nd place. Overall, much fun, and a great last training run before the Monumental Marathon in Indy in 3 weeks.

Steve-- good job on your race and 2nd place!

I crewed at Oil Creek 100 this weekend. Totally different being on the crew side. It was fun the whole weekend. Somehow, I never saw RunNYTrails We did hang out with Roots for a while though, which was nice. DH timed out around mile 70 unfortunately.

I ran the Green Mountain Marathon in S. Hero VT Sunday as a training run. It's 60% paved - 40% dirt roads. The plan was to go slow and add miles on at the end. I ran my slowest marathon ever (4:28) but tacked on another 5.5 after a one minute break at the finish. Ran the whole marathon then walked the hills on the 5.5. The result was 31.7 miles (51.35 km) in 5:32:54 for a 10:30/mile avg. Adding on the 1.4 mile warm up I got 33.1 miles in total. That's a new daily high for me. Today my legs feel better after going 33 than they do when I race 26.2.

This gives me confidence for my first 50 miler on 11/20. Though I still need to get used to walking more on hills and eating on the run.

It was nice to meet a fellow kickster while out on the hometown trail. Steve was vary gracious as he flew by me multiple times. The race was on a three mile loop, (although later I was told it was 3.5) and it was a beautiful day and part of a night. I called it early at 16 hours due to major foot issues. You can find the full RR chocked full of run on sentances and gramatical errors here: INTO THE MILD.

It was a perfect day and evening. The course was pretty spectacular, tho difficult to enjoy in any panoramic sort of way ~ b/c of all the rocky areas and having to focus on the footing. We did however pause several times to enjoy views of the surrounding hills and then the evenings' clear, crisp Fall sky and shiny stars.

Its not a course that i would ever had registered to participate in as an entrant. From the description I would have been far too intimidated to take it on. So I am happy that i went to "pace". I found that it was not as difficult as I had imagined & I would not be as apprehensive about trying something like that in the future. It was hilly and technical, for sure . . . but manageable. There were your typical NY/PA rocks and roots and leaves along with some very nice views. There were also some luxurious runnable sections. The course was dry which really helped b/c the fallen leaves were quite abundant. Pretty, but treacherous !!

It was much appreciated! I ran the 25K at Vulture Bait this weekend. It was a perfect day for a run, cool and crisp and sunny. I was hoping to finish in 2:30, and came in at 2:29:35. Not bad!

swallen .. so glad you are still running and did so well!!! WOOT ... I heard this weekend that the HUFF isn't happening this year .... park funding or some such thing? not that I could have gone again but it was a really nice race and I hope it revives!

Oilcreek couldn't have been more beautiful or better running weather ... so glad it didn't rain all week like it did last year, so it wasn't the muddy mess it was in 2009 My left kneecap and right leg from hip to knee were a mess for about 40 miles of my 62 but I held it together and grimmaced my way thru the downhills, esp the last 4 hours or so ... oh how I wish my IT band would behave better! and I don't know whassup with my left kneecap, the only times it's EVER been an issue started at mile 13 of the 50 miler at Mohican this summer and then again on Sat, at mile 15 on at Oilcreek ... NOT COOL ... my legs are very pissed off at me right now but I think it was worth it ... I did the first 50K loop in 6hours and the second time took me 7 hours ... I hope to get in better training and remedy my bleeding out of time for my next 100k

Nice job!!

It was fun being out there. And, interesting that a bunch of people recognized me - in street clothes - from other races. Hope you'll say "Hi" if we run into each other again!

Interestingly, I was in Ft Wayne (Indiana) over the weekend and ran the HUFF 50k course. The fall colors were really nice, but DAMN the glaciers sure did a number up there! I forgot how flat northern Indiana is!

Great job at your race Steve! And Brett! (good call on stopping early to keep from getting injured).

I did a road half the weekend before Woodstock. Felt great - cruising along at 7:45 pace, neck and neck with the woman who wound up winning the Masters division. Then, just past the 8-mile marker, something in my foot just sort of snapped. It was sudden and quite dramatic. One step and done. I couldn't walk. But, found that I could gimp it in running on the 1-square-inch of usable foot. Still managed to go sub-2:00. But... something definitely wrong.

As you know, I ran Woodstock anyways - after finding that I could sort-of-run in standard shoes. Foot didn't seem to come out any worse for wear.

Took x-rays last weekend. Saw one definite fracture - proximal end of the third metatarsal. Still waiting on radiology report to see what else might be lurking - having pain in fifth metatarsal.

So, taking it easy - giving the tootsie lots of love, rest, and supplements. It's been four weeks since the snap; three weeks since Woodstock. We'll give it another three - at least.

Wow, that reminds me of the Stowe 8 Miler back in 2001. I stepped on a rock on a dirt road and felt something go. Limped to the finish. My foot made a funny clicking sound for weeks after that.
