Hi KS and TW

Went down to Charleston WV for a group run of around 16 miles on the trails of Kanawha State Forest. I got there about an hour before the posted start time so I stayed in the car to get warmed up after sleeping in the car the night before with temps getting in the 20s. Everybody started gathering around and we got going a few minutes after 10. Didn't know what to expect so I ran easy on the road until we got to the single track trail. We immediately when up a big hill and hiked most of the way up. Once at the top we fell into an easy pace with 5 in our group and another 7 behind. It had been a cool 30° at the bottom but warmed up quickly when we got on the ridge. I had regular sweat pants and sweat shirt, light gloves, and a hat that I wasn't ready to take off. We worked our way down that hill and went up and down another until we came out at the campground where a couple wives and volunteers had an aid station at a shelter with water and snacks. We stopped for a few minutes so I drank a small water. I was happy when we took back off as I was starting to get a little cold. I'm not used to starting and stopping during a run and we did that a few other times to mark the trail so the runners behind us could follow. We had 8.5 miles in at the aid station and set off for the last climb that was the largest. We hiked up it and was mostly on single track the rest of the way. After about 2.5 hours, I was starting to feel the uphills and was really hoping we were about finished. The last part was fairly straight down and we finally made it to our cars. At this point I really started feeling bad. My stomach was aching and various muscles started cramping up if I moved wrong. Eventually I even had a chin muscle cramp!! I stayed to talk for a few minutes but had to leave as I was starting to get cold too. I drove a few miles to a gas station to use the restroom and get out of some of the cold clothes. After getting warmed up, getting rehydrated and eating a couple mini donuts I started feeling better as I headed for home.

About 40 miles up the road, I stopped at a DQ as a couple cheeseburgers sounded just like what I needed. I went to get my wallet and it wasn't there. I instantly realized I had left it in the gas station restroom. Of course when I got back there, it hadn't been turned in and there was no sign of it. I was hoping at least somebody took the cash and dumped the wallet in the trash, but I came up empty after looking through all the trash bins. Now my problem was that I had absolutely NO money, I was hungry, and I had less than a half tank of gas. I took care of the hunger for a while by eating the other 4 mini donuts and a package of swiss rolls and also drank the rest of the pop I had gotten that morning. I called my parents to tell them of the situation so when I got closer to home, they could meet me with some money. I did better than I thought on the gas mileage and we decided to meet about 25 miles from home at a Burger King. We pulled in at exactly the same time. My car said I still had a range of 60 miles but the gas light had just come on. By this time I was starving and thirsty. I was going through butterscotch discs as fast as I could but those aren't very filling. Those crispy chicken sandwiches never tasted so good. I got some gas in the car and made it home. Amazingly my legs feel great though I probably won't run until wednesday to make sure all the muscles get fueled back up. Already cancelled the credit card I had so the only thing I need to do is replace my drivers license. It's probably been 15 years since the last time that happened.

I'm not really a big fan of the group runs like today with all the starts and stops but it was still fun to do and I realized if I am going to be out there 3 hours, I need to eat a little during that time. 2.5 hours seems to be the limit right now. It probably didn't help that I got a salad the night before instead of a few more carbs like a pizza.

Since my weeks go sunday-saturday, I did have a big mileage week as I got in 46.5 miles in 3 runs.
