No Ultra races, but since I'm a glutton for punishment I got up Saturday morning at 6:00, ran for an hour, then went up the street and registered for a road 10k (starting at 9:00) with a massive 3 mile uphill at the start, set a PR while taking 6th place overall. And if that were not enough, I entered the 5k too. It was supposed to be a trail race, which was the entire reason I showed up. Ended up getting moved to a stupid asphalt loop run 5 times, which was actually pretty cool because it was again hilly, and I got to lap people (giving encouragement as I did, of course). The 5k kicked off at 11:00. I took 3rd place overall in that race and set another PR. Now that I look at my splits, betweet the two races, I ran each 5k section faster than the previous one. Still, i'd much rather run long and slow.. none of this gut busting short stuff. Basically have to hurt yourself to do well in those races.

And as if that were not enough I did hit the trails for another hour Saturday evening.

Its rainy here today, and Sunday means football so I plan on spending 3 or 4 hours on the dreadmill while watching the Steelers. Its the treadmill, but it beats sitting still.

Happy trails everybody.

Saturday in Alaska brought us the 3rd Annual Alyeska Climb-a-thon. The race starts at the bottom of the mountain, which is sea level, and climbs for 2.2 miles and 2000'. When you get to the top you catch a Tram down and do it again. You've got 10 hours to do as many laps as you can. The weather was sunny and I was able to pull 11 laps with 22 minutes left to spare. I averaged 45 minutes a lap and had to wait for the tram a lot. Longest wait was 9 minutes but it made for some interesting strategies trying to catch it when you were close or letting it go.

I was on track early in the day to do 12 laps (the new record), doing three 35 minute laps until I missed a tram (literally shut the doors as I was coming down the steps towards them, but it is remotely operated so no opening the doors), so I had to wait. It threw my fast pace off and I slowed my pace thinking that there was no way, loosing 9 minutes at the top and 7 minute ride down, that I could make up the time to get another lap in. I ran the rest of the day alone not knowing how far behind the leaders I was. But, I did a kick A** time so I am really happy. Elated in fact.

Suprisingly, I feel quite good today. Good enough to work on my roof. Running uphill all day is easy on the joints. Hard on the glutes and quads.

Overall, I did 24.2 miles and 24,000' of elevation gain in 9:38. I feel like I worked for my beer.

I ran the Wasatch 100 over the weekend. Holy freaking hell that one was hard. It wrecked me more than Hardrock.

I think Sherpa John ran it too (it's the last race of the Grand Slam), but I never saw him.

50 miles of hiking and running on the Superior hiking trail this weekend while marking and sweeping the trail for Sawtooth 100, threw in some blister repair for runners at one aid station as well.

My first trail 20-miler is done, complete with the worst chiggers/seed ticks I've gotten so far despite plenty of bug repellent. There is a spigot at the trail head...I usually wash my legs and feet off when I am done. This time I forgot my flip-flops, so I stood on the rocks around the spigot, chucked my socks up on the parking lot and my shoes in the grass so I could put them back on, minus the socks. I got back into town to pick up my son and was headed to the store and my feet were BURNING....I took a shoe off and my foot is literally brown, it is covered in bugs. I got as many off as I could but they had a good 30 minutes to chew on me from the trail head to when I got home and in the shower to scrub the rest off. It's been a rough weekend dealing with that....I have bug bites between my toes!

Besides that, I did my 10-miler the day after my 20-miles and managed a 1:40:30, which is pretty darn fast after 5 hours on the trail on Friday. I ran with a couple of friends who are faster than I am to start with but who also had not run 20 already in the same 24 hours (20 starting at noon Friday, 10 at 6a.m. Saturday).

I had my last triathlon of the season on Saturday -- Patriots Half in Williamsburg, VA. I had a great time and a pretty good race. I'm nearing a solid middle of the pack now so that's good. The best part was finally getting a good run out of this race. My last two attempts have resulted in falling apart at various points of the run.

Race report here: http://macluskie.com/reports/2010/patriots2010/index.html

I'm now recovering and ramping up miles for Mountain Masochist, my next big race and first 50 miler. Hill work outs will be abundant.

Last week I signed up for a 100 miler later this year. So I started training in earnest this weekend with a 10 mile run on a crazy technical trail in Gatineau Park near Ottawa. Fun!

Did some (paved) hill repeats on Saturday - pushed myself hard. But, felt like a slacker after - how can my running day be done? I've only been out for an hour?

Made up for that guilt by putting in six hours Sunday on the rocky, rooty, mucky mountain bike and bridle trails of a local state park.

Only stubbed my toes once - and these were toes I had yet to stub! Life is good!!

How is it that people are able to post pictures of trails that seem to have few rocks and no roots in them? Drives me crazy.... lol. I've seen photos taken miles from anywhere, high in the mountains... and its basically a rock free, perfect ribbon of dirt.
