I did 18 on the roads today, solo. I was hoping to do 20+ but sometimes life just gets in the way. I am happy with the 18 and it was too windy to walk much, so it was a high quality run at least :D

Had a good weekend of training, and hanging out with the family. Still a lot of snow here. Trails won't be open for some weeks I imagine.

Friday: Weight training, followed by 10 mile run

Saturday: Connected up with some Boston Marathon trainers who were following a training schedule: 16 miles at 7:40 pace, then I did 4 more miles on my own at 7:20 pace. Felt pretty good so the training has been paying off.

Sunday: 2:40 xc ski at moderate pace, then saw "The King's Speech" with the family.

Ran the Dirty Duo on Saturday. I usually do teh 50km, but my trainingisn't up to snuff so I opted for the 25km.

My plan was to run an even pace & pick up some time on the downhills. It's quite technical in some sections & I figured that this would be my only opportunity to reel in the road runners & climbers.

The rain started shortly after the start & I was regretting not taking a jacket....ah well...more reason to run fast.

I was having a decent run until the last 3rd when I started to get calf cramps. It reduced my speed to managing the spasms. I wasn't the only one having issues as I caught up to Nicola Gildersleeve in the last 5km....but once we hit the final 2km road section, she put the hammer down & it was all I could do to watch her pull away.....another 4 people pulled ahead of me in that last section & all I could do was pray that my calves wouldn't seize.

Man! Those 25km's hurt!

Not sure where I finished. But I was happy with the event & challked it up as a decent training run. I stuck around long enough to have some post-race lasagna & salad (a perk of this race) & chat with my buddies Mike, Karl, & John.

Jimbo went and dun something unexpected.

I went and dun some fast running.....

Ellerbe Springs Marathon - a good fun low key road marathon here in NC. Pretty hilly, certainly not a fast course.

No plan - it was to be my final long run before Umstead.

First half - dayum, pretty quick. 2:14. Then I thought if I really push - I could beat my 4 year old marathon PR of 4:26. So push I did. Then with 3 miles to go, I figgered if I really really push, I would not only PR, but beat my long long "secret dream time" of 4:22 (10 minute miles). Well whatddyaknow - 4:21. I wasn't expecting that. It feels pretty good to be running so well just 3 weeks out of Umstead (as an aside, this was 37 minutes faster than last year, which was also 3 weeks out from Umstead)

This was my 4th 26.2 in 4 weeks, it's almost like if you run a lot, you actually get better at it! Or as a friend put it, the secret to a fast marathon, is a slow marathon the week before.

Anyway, here is me finishing, with my buddy Fred who decided to pace me for the second half. Incidentally, the guy on the left clapping me, is Captain Ivan Castro, who is totally blind, and despite his blindness (from the Iraq war), still serves in the army, and runs marathons and ultras; yesterday, he ran the first 13.1 with Fred as his guide as a training run ahead of Boston.

Here is the profile - as many put it, this not a PR course. HA!

Today, I tried a recovery run of 8.5 - turned into a hike. A slow one at that. Tonight, I am having Fried Quads and Yuengling for dinner. I hurt. Bad. But very happy to be feeling this good ahead of one of my goal races.

Is that pacer the irrepressible Lieutenant Colonel Doom of Umstead fame?

Nice run. four marathons in 4 weeks puts my Umstead training to shame.

Oh yeah, my weekend running:

21 on Saturday, 18 Sunday, mostly road or bike path, mostly flat or only slightly rolling. I like to do back to back longish runs in preparing for a 100 miler, rather than the 6-8 hour efforts some of you do.

It all felt fine this weekend, but I could use about 3 extra weeks before Umstead. I still feel a little behind the curve after missing longer runs in all the snow of January and early February. I might even try to sneak in a 20 miler this coming weekend, two weeks out from the race.

I am starting to feel the excitement, knowing that in 17 days, I will be driving south on I-95 with the wife and little kids headed for a long weekend in North Carolina.

Indeed - 'twas Doom who escorted me round, and what a fine pacer he was.

Look forward to seeing you down here, getting close isn't it? Let me know if you need anything "on-the-ground" so to speak or if you have any local type questions that I can help you with.

I feel more prepared for this one than I have for my previous 100's - not quite sure what that will do on the day mind, just hope it doesn't lead to any overconfidence which has certainly done me in before.

I was out there last September as my father has moved away from Boston.

I used to spend summers & Christmas in Val David/St Agathe when I was a kid. Gorgeous area! I spent more than enough evenings at the Mini-Putt.

Back then, Val David still had the rail tracks, but it's nice to see the bike path that they have created.

I remember the Maple Leaf Trail.

Not sure when I will get there again...but hopefully before the Fall.
