It's Thursday - and it's week four of my, "Returning to Running" quest - It started with GREAT intentions, but hasn't resulted with really anything to speak of.

Monday - well, Monday is my German Class at night so I don't run on Monday nights - That being said, we had a great substitute instructor that night and I learned a great deal - she was vibrant; excited about teaching and taught the entire night "Auf Deutsch" - which is what I prefer - As a result, I came out much more motivated on getting better at German than before. (At least one good thing for the week to report!) - If you're in the Twin Cities, You really should check out the Germanic American Institute. What a great cultural resource!

Anyway - on to Tuesday - I had to drive to SW Minnesota to meet one of my sales managers for his review and then we visited a customer. The day started good, and well - ended not bad for me. A great deal of snow melt, on the other hand - made it not so good for others. In fact, a sad story to report - a Minnesota DOT worker was lost when his backhoe was swept in the river while trying to clear a culvert - With the amount of snow we've had this year and the fast melt time, rivers are rising everywhere. As a result of that accident, they blocked my route home so I had to divert around the tragedy - I got home safely - but by the time you spend six hours traveling - there's no energy to run... Tuesday Bagged.

Wednesday - well, the forecast for snow was supposed to be limited to just Northern Minnesota - with Duluth getting the brunt of the storm and the cities some rain mixed with snow - It seems Minnesota weathermen suck as much as other weathermen. Duluth got wind and we got 8 inches!!! My deck - finally empty and clear of snow since early November - is once again completed covered and packed with snow. It snowed until sundown so no run yesterday. Thankfully, my job affords me to the luxury to work from home - and it's a good thing because it was reported between 6 am and 9am yesterday - there were over 100 accidents on the roads in the Cities. Not only can they not predict the weather - Minnesotans can't drive in it either!

So - that brings us to Thursday - no running all week and I really didn't want to run today - but thanks to the friendly jabbing of Chele (remember her?) and my brother - I laced them up and hit the bricks. The sun is shining though the temps are around 31 degrees. The roads are clear (hey - they can't drive in it but they DO get the roads cleaned fast!). Ronan and I went out and did the "hill that kicks my ass" route. It was only about a 2 mile run but it was a strong run. How fast? dunno - my Garmin 305 wasn't charged (darn it all!) but based on how I felt and the tempo - I'd say it was probably 10- 1030 pace.. Pretty good actually.

The cold air did have me hacking pretty good by 2 miles - which is the main reason I stopped then instead of do the last .75 loop. It was a good run and I have it on the books now. I'll be able to run again tomorrow and probably the rest of the week. Temps are going back up and I'm hoping to see my deck by mid week!

So - As the week goes - it sucked for total miles and effort -but you know, life has a way of getting in the way of running - the key, I think, is to not totally give up but just keep at it.

Thanks Chele!

The today is 28 degrees. It's dry with 50% humidity and sunshine abounds. I just got back from a short but a pretty good run. It's the same route I ran Thursday. This time my Garmin was charged. I think the reason I'm stopping here is well the cold air has me coughing a bit more than normal. In another week, the weather will be back up above freezing and winter will have loosened his grip on Minnesota. Then, I'll be able to stretch out and increase my distances.

1.6 miles -but a strong and hard run. The pace was 10:38. Sounds slow, hungh? And normally - for such a short distance - I'd agree. But, I gotta tell you the only flat part of this run is my driveway and even that has a pitch on it! I can't measure this run by the time nor the distance, but I can measure it on how I feel during the run and after the run - In a phrase: MUCH STRONGER! Even though my legs are tight, my breathing isn't labored - it's rhythmic and consistent. I'm not fighting for air even when I tackle the widow maker hill at the 1 mile mark. In fact, I mentally - 'downshifted' and changed my gait and stride to climb the hill - It made a difference -

1. Shorten my stride

2. Increase my cycle

3. Pull from my quads

As if I were a 10 speed bike, I downshifted and up the hill I went.

Yeah - the run wasn't a killer distance - but my mind and body is beginning to remember what it takes to run in different temperatures; different circumstances; and different grades.

It was a good run

Todays run was pretty good. Not that long - only 3.25 miles - but the weather is still on the chilly side. Which, while I was running I got to thinking about what are some tips about running outside - especially here in Minnesota with snow and cold temps.

So - this post will be about some of the things I've learned over the last 12 years of running.

Running outside when the trails are covered with snow requires you to run on the shoulder of the road. Fortunately, in my neck of the woods, the roads have full size shoulders and plenty of room - but still there needs to be care taken. The important thing:

SEE AND BE SEEN AND BE ALERT

1. SEE: It amazes me how many times as I drive down two lane roads I come up on runners who are running on the same side of the road as traffic flows! This is SERIOUS NO NO! When you have to run on roads - always run against the traffic - This way - YOU can SEE the cars even if they don't see you! Think about all those drivers out there texting or talking on the phone; fiddling with their radios or doing their makeup - in a matter of seconds, they serve on to the shoulder. If you're running with the traffic, you'll never see them coming and you're on the evening news.

2. BE SEEN: When I run outside, I always wear brightly colored or reflective clothes - even if it's sunshine and clear outside! I want my outline to stand out from the normal scenery - The contrast will hopefully alert the driver that you're there. I purchased an Iluminite reflective running jacket about 8 years ago - and I can tell you - people see me coming from MILES AWAY (ok - a bit of an exaggeration, but you get the point. The jacket is on the pricy side (over $100.00) - but there are other options as well. If you know someone in the military or have access to a military PX (BX for the Airforce) - the military uses a reflective belt for their soldiers because they normally do their PT at the break of dawn - I picked one up about 5 years ago while visiting my father near Fort Rucker, Alabama.

3 And Finally: BE ALERT!: When I'm running on the roads and facing traffic - I make it a point to make EYE CONTACT with the driver of the on coming car - It forces me to make sure he/she sees me and if they don't I know well in advance if there's going to be a problem! Many times, the cars will even move towards the middle of the road and give me even more room. When they do, I respond by waving to them - It's my way of saying, "Thanks" for looking out for me.

So - there you have it - a few tips that came to mind as I plodded out my 3.25 miles at a meager 11:30 pace. If you're out running - remember these tips and if you need reflective gear - check out these products!

Happy running!

Here's the womans version of my illumite jacket - it's light and very reflective!

Not quite the same as the one I bought at Fort Rucker - but another great 'BE SEEN" device
