That's cool, Mariposai! I just got back from my run, warm & windy. One mile warmup, then fartlek intervals. My instructions were: each pick up should last at least 45-60 seconds, no longer than 2 minutes. This means that the pace you speed up to should be manageable enough that you don't burn out before that, but hard enough that 2 minutes is all you really want. This does NOT mean to sprint (it's like she knows my tendencies now). You should be able to maintain the pace beyond the 2 minutes, but you should be happy to slow it down. This should be faster than your goal pace, probably around 7:35-7:50. Each pick up can be different lengths, so don't stress over that. Remember that fartleks are speed play--informal and should be fun. Get your time's worth out of these workouts, but make sure you enjoy yourself.

I did just that & my pace on the pick-ups was between 7:29 & 7:57. 3 miles of that with the recoveries about a minute, and then a mile cooldown. I ran on a variety of surfaces including some open fields, dirt, etc. on the warmup & cooldown.
