With our kids finally out of the house last summer, and just DW and I … and our 2 cats, we were missing our little wiener dog that passed away a few years ago. Someone around here or maybe in the old CR clubhouse had posted thread about pet adoption through Petfinder.com. We’ve been looking at the site for a few months and last week saw a couple of little doggies that we thought would fit into our environment ….. Ricky and Lucy (named after the Ricardo’s) 4 and 5 year olds.

DWand I including our house were checked out by the Dachshund Rescue and we passed! We have had Ricky and Lucy for less than 48 hours and so far they want to eat our indoor cats whenever they see them (we‘ve had to keep them separated in different rooms), Ricky has been aggressive toward my son and employee, and got loose yesterday going after our neighbors chickens!!! Out of control…… I may be too old to go through this transition!

But they’re so cute!

Tres cute, Ricky and Lucy!!! Hoping it's just a little adaptation anxiety and they'll mellow out.

Congratulations to all of you, including the (((cats))).

congratulations PapaJim! And thanks for adopting not one but TWO adorable little pets! They are likely feeling some anxiety and once they get used to everything I bet they mellow out a bit.

The lovely and gracious mrsccrunr and myself have always had dachsunds and I have all my life. They do sometimes have their own will. Maybe that's why they were up for adoption. All the pet experts say to make sure the dogs know who is boss and they'll learn to behave. Good luck!
great pics.

Congrats on the two new additions! Our cats were traumatized when we adopted a dog in September 2006, but after a few weeks they all settled into a new routine. Hopefully your transition will be as quick, easy, and painless as ours was!

Our family had a miniature black & tan longhaired when I was a kid. Cute dog, total mama's girl. When we adopted our dog, the cat (whom we'd had for only a couple months) thought it was a very bad idea. Now they're inseparable. Here's hoping things settle down soon and congrats on the new additions!

I LOVE weiner dogs. There are two on my floor at home, different owners. Noah and Nicky. They are both so sweet and their fur is like velvet.

Anyway, you should post some pictures in the pet thread and I am sure things will settle down when the cats teach them who's boss

Jim, a dog becomes aggressive, when he is trying to be the pack leader. He must learn that humans are the pack leader and he is lower on the ladder.

That will calm him down. As long as he thinks he is pack leader he will be aggressive.

You need to take him for walks, and he needs to walk next to you. If he leads and pulls the leash and drags you behind, he is pack leader. If you let him sniff what he wants, when he wants, he is the leader.

A couple of sharp jerks on the leash and sudden direction changes by you should teach him you are the leader, not him.

Sharp tugs on the leash are not dog abuse, they are teaching methods. You can't treat a new dog like a kid, with lots of love. Discipline first, then give love. Not unconditional love then discipline.

Best wishes.
