The language barrier was so difficult that I don't think she understood more than 3 words in 10 of what we were saying. Her answers were almost jibberish. I really hope this isn't the norm, because there is no way in good conscience that I could hire someone to look after my kids on the basis of that interview.

I just wonder what her life story is. Must be interesting. Coming to a foreign country to work, etc.

But I can understand how important it is to be able to communicate with the person watching your babies!

I hope you find a nanny soon, T-diddy.

Maybe there is a reason for that. Note your experience with this nanny.

Sounds like either:

A) You're going to have to poney up the dough.

Or

B) You're going to have to suffer the communication issues.

I think the story is pretty similar. They are born to a poor family in the Phillipines with a large number of siblings. Their parents raise them in a loving christian home and give them the best education they can. After graduating from university they find that the employment opportunities and financial rewards at home are limited. They look for foreign work. Many go directly to Hong Kong to work as domestic helpers. Sounds After a minimum of a year in Hong Kong they can come to Canada under the live in nanny program. They sign up with an agency and hope they are selected by a Canadian family. Many of them are married and have multiple children being raised by husbands and family in the Phillipines.

If there was a quality of care issue Phillipina nanny's would not be the norm here. The only advantage I see in a native born care giver is their language skills.

Oh, I know we're going to have some communications issues due to language skills. I just didn't appreciate how bad it could be. We hope she was an abberation, but we could be wrong. We're told they are required to write thier profiles in English. Based on the quality of the profiles I would expect the ability to understand a simple question and respond in a logical manner.

We were told they wrote them or dictated them in english. I would not be surprised if they had some help hence why the phone interview. I'm amazed how quickly they go though - I'm getting worried you can't be too picky.

Good luck with the process. It is a tough process but I am sure you will make the right choice. You will know the right person when you find him/her.
