Looking for a list or name of DC area running clubs that are more social than competitive for a dear friend living in the area.

Friend is not a "real runner" (her words) but is slowly getting more and more into running as a way of life rather than just an exercise. She doesn't race (not much just yet) and isn't exactly looking into doing more. She isn't into performance (not yet... see racing ). What she is looking for is a social club with the focus being running and events and gatherings such as social hour. In other words, no hardcore groups unless they also have a section that is far more social (like a charity runner). And if there are a bunch of 20-somethings as members, even better.

Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. And she thanks you too!

Here, the local shoe stores all have running groups and training groups that are decidedly social once the teenage CC runners are off the line.

As my sil said yesterday "it was totally worth the $25 bucks to get the $40 tech shirt and some new friends to run with" that is for pig training. the weekly 5k+ groups are free.

Once we started getting the shoe store(s) e-newsletter(s), we can find a group to go run with any given day of the week. they post pace predictions and we pick which ones we think we can handle.

Totally take advantage of the 10% discount being affiliated with their group gets you too!!

Great idea... thank you! I'll pass along word to look the websites of local running shops, because you are right in that many of them cater to newbies and more social runners. Thanks again!
