Welcome to VRAA "Spring Training"

Wow, what a great turnout on a week's notice. Thanks for the interest in the game. I borrowed a scoring system from a local multi-sport club's winter Virtual Camp and thought to try it here. Keeping in line with my initial intentions, the goal is to keep it simple, have fun, and to include as many participants as possible. I think we'll accomplish that.

We'll give it a go, but I do expect some hiccups. We may discover inconsistencies with scoring. Naturally, we will think of enhancements for future rounds. I look forward to discovering along with everyone here on how best to do this. If you have questions, please post to the Questions, Answers, and Discussion thread. Otherwise, I am available by PM for one and all.

I admit I haven't been around for past VRAAs, but I get the sense there's quite a history here. Any traditions to continue?

Personally, I hope to come out of this game faster and stronger. I look forward to "sweating" out a few miles with you over the next few weeks.

Good luck!

VRAA scoring categories:

I. Running/Walking: 4 pts for every mile (1 pt for every 1/4 mile)

II. Swimming: 1 pt for every 100 yards (indoor or outdoor)

III. Outdoor Cycling: 1 pt for every mile

IV. General Cardio*: 1 pt for every 3 minutes

V. Alternate workouts**: 1 pt for every 5 minutes (maximum of 60 minutes, or 12 points, per day)

* General Cardio includes: Stationary bike/Bike trainer/Eliptical/Stair- stepper/Rowing, etc. The basic requirement for this category is an activity that produces a sustained, elevated and/or aerobic heart rate.

** Alternate workouts: This category is open to interpretation. To a point. Below are the suggested activities. The guidance with this category is to count time spent working and not rest time.

- Yoga/Pilates
- Weighlifting/Circuit training
- Core/Abdominal work

At some point, we must draw the line. I don't envision lifting and crunching my way across America. I do however, value these activities. Therefore there is a daily cap for category V points: 60 minutes, or 12 points maximum per day.

Player instructions:

Gameplay is simple.

- Workout.

- Post your points.

There will be one thread for each day of the VRAA. If needed, you can edit your post. At tabulation time, the thread will be locked to serve as a record snapshot of the day's events.

If travelling or busy, come here when available to catch-up your workouts.

At a minimum, I plan to tabulate each Monday. Please have your workouts up-to-date at the end of each weekend.

A leaderboard will be posted starting on Monday.

Team competition: Two team games planned.

Main game: Team with highest point total at the end of round on April 8. Winner of this game will be awarded title of VRAA Champion.

Secondary game: First team to 8,400 points.

This number represents the number of kilometers in 5,220 miles. Admittedly, 4 points for every mile kind of skews the milage. So I've found the longest route I could find with waypoints through selected Kickrunner towns. Can we get some love as we pass through your city?

5,220 miles (8,400 kms) is a route:

- originating in Fairbanks, AK (Home of the EQ Marathon); continuing on through
- Calgary, AB (2011mi/3236km)
- Fargo, ND (2970mi/4779km)
- Madison, WI (3474mi/5590km)
- Cincinnati, OH (3920mi/6307km)
- Atlanta, GA (4388mi/7060km)
- Boca Raton, FL (5091mi/8191km)
- and terminating in Key West, FL. (5224mi/8401km)

Is there someone out there talented enough to draw this map?

Tiebreakers: To break a tie, team with highest number of total run/walk miles wins. Second tie-breaker, number of total team swim miles.

Team size descrepancy: For any reason, if one team has less participants than another the following adjustment will be made. From the short-handed team, the team's average point total will be awarded in order to make up the scoring deficiency.

I'm sure I'm leaving many things out. This is enough to get started. Start posting your workouts anytime. First tabulation on Monday.

Next step: announce teams.

JackDuggan- we won't need this image, so I am going to delete your post once the good map goes up. Thank you!
