Hi All-

I wanted to start a thread on this idea based on a conversation that Roots and I had in Madison. I may be misquoting Roots, but there are still plans in the works for a more formal event in Joe's honor in Ohio. The idea we had may be less formal and more personal to each of us.

As we all know, in a week will be the marker of Joe's death, which is not something we feel like celebrating.

However, in true Voo fashion, we also know that he did something pretty amazing the night before his death--a 20 miler after work, which is who he was and worth celebrating.

Roots and I discussed having get-togethers of groups locally who would meet and run basically whatever they wanted to on the 23rd to honor and celebrate what Voo did best. For example, in the MSP area, this would be along the River Road as that's where Voo ran here. There is a 5 mile route we could all run together. People of course, can also do this on their own and post virtually, but it would be cool to do this and then meet after for beer or something?

Just a thought...I wanted to throw it out there as it's coming up this next week (I believe this would be a Friday night). The other idea Roots had was to wait until Joe's b-day to give people time to train and have a more formal event where people would run 20 miles, 2 miles or a 20 mile relay.

What think you?

No runners here really locally to meet up with, but I'd love to bang out some mileage on Friday in memory of the big guy.

I figure I can get in a run around the Haight, where we met up for beers and sausages when he was in town for a conference

I'll be near you, I think. I'll be in Santa Cruz area Friday day and will get some miles in between work stuffs and shopping stuffs. Did he run there at all?

Hey RTFL - that's right! Forgot you were going to be in my neck of the woods on vacation.

I don't think he made it down to Santa Cruz (which is about 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 hr away from SF, depending on traffic), but I can't be 100% sure about that.

If you plan to run there, you can head to Harvey West Park if you want some trail running, or you can always run along the shore I believe (West Cliff Drive to Beach St where the Boardwalk is; I can't completely vouch for how city traffic will be since I don't get down there myself very often.)

I'm meeting a friend in the city on Friday in the middle of the day, so I don't think I'll have time either before it or after it to run 20 miles. And I think I won't have time on Saturday either. But maybe on Sunday...

By the way, the anniversary of Joe's death is actually on Saturday (the 24th) in case that wasn't clear. We remember it well because it's the day before my wife's birthday. His last run (the after-work 20 miler) was on the 23rd, so I think it's perfectly appropriate to do the runs on the 23rd...
