I was going to skip this report due to time constraints, but since PR's are so rare for me in 5k's, i thought I should at least document it for myself

This was the 10th Annual Fall Classic, which benefits the Voorheesville School and Community Foundation. The Foundation in turn benefits many extracurricular activities at the school. I remember the year that proceeds from the race were used to purchase hurdles, jumping pits, and other track and field equipment when no funds were available after the construction of the new track facility at the school. A truly good cause, for the kids.

This race had a rather late start - 9:30 AM - this past Saturday, the 16th. When I drove to the school to register on my way home from driving #2 Son to his PSAT, I saw that there were only about 45 people pre-registered, and I had a very good shot at an AG win, a trophy for 1st School District member win, and/or maybe an overall top 3; but I also knew that due to the weather we've gotten at this small race the past few years, there would likely be a lot more people showing up for day-of-race registration, since it had stopped raining after a fairly turbulent week in the Albany area. So I reminded myself that my "mission" for the day was to attempt an assault on 19:59, and in doing so, best my PR of 20:39 set at the same race (on a different course) in 2009. Those two things I could sort of control - who showed up, I could not control. That brought me back down to earth and got me back in focus.

My plan was to run a fast first mile, a slightly slower 2nd mile, and have a little something extra for the finish. Specifically, I wanted to run 6:20 / 6:40 / 6:30 / sprint the finish. I knew this would be a challenge, mentally, because my 2-mile race PR, though it's a bit soft, is 13:29, and I was asking myself to beat that by :40 and then run another mile, plus.

As expected, some fast 40's and even some fast younger runners registered prior to the race, and as I approached the starting line, I saw that those uncontrollable things took care of themselves, and it was now settled that I would be running against the clock, solely.

I executed the race plan as well as could be expected. Miles 1 and 2 went by in 6:17 and 6:35, so I was actually :08 ahead of pace, but I was definitely feeling like I was going to need a push to run mile 3 anywhere near as fast as mile 2, much less faster. At about the 2.25 mile mark, the headwind, which only was bothersome for about 1/2 mile, went from steady to gusting, and nearly stood me in my tracks a couple of times. At that point, the runner ahead of me was now out of sight (he finished 1 minute ahead of me), and there was no indication of anyone breathing down my neck, so it was very difficult to do anything but hold my pace the best I could.

I guess i must have fallen back to about a 7:00 pace for the last 1.1 mile, as I crossed the line in 20:35.

Mission: sort of accomplished. While I didn't really come close to breaking 20:00, i did set a new 5k PR by :04, and in the process cut :47 off of my 2-mile PR (unofficially).

Overall - finished 9th out of around 90.

M40-49 AG - 4th out of 15

School District - 2nd place, but no trophy. The guy ahead of me, in 8th, took that honor.

I did earn a shiney bronze medal, since the overall winner was 40, and that bumped me to 3rd.

(If there were a 45-49 AG I would have taken a gold, but no sense regretting that - another 'uncontrollable'.)

congrats on your new prs bty!!

but i bet you could run that 5k faster: if you plug in your 2mi split (12:53) into the merv race calculator, it predicts that you could run a 5k in 20:38... which is what you did. i'm sure you could run a 2mi race faster than 12:53, and with better pacing you could go sub-20 in a 5k.

just for kicks, try negative splits next time...what have you got to lose? a fast first mile only brings you lactic acid and oxygen debt. block out what everyone else is doing and just run your own splits. if you run 6:33 / 6:30 for the first two, i'm sure you can finish very strong and crack 20:00

Thanks Heme.

mc - I didn't want to say anything, but .... I'm pretty sure the race was long by about 100 meters, and I think I actually hit the 5k point at around 20:15 or so. I'm still believing I can do a sub 20:00, if everything falls into place. I may try the negative pacing, but I have never found it to work for me in short races in the past; though running the splits as closely as what you suggest just might work.

yikes... see if you can get a usatf certified course to make a run at the 20min mark... just to be sure.

but yes, don't try anything new in a race... try negative splitting in your workouts first. it takes me so long to warm up, i'm always running the second half of my interval workouts faster than the first half. give that a try. or, design a specific negative split workout... like doing a couple of 3:00 800m, but running 95/85 splits. cruise the first 400m easy, thinking about saving it for the last 400m, then let it fly on the last 400m.

oh, and mostly, keep having fun

FO and Opie - Thanks, I'll keep at it, Maybe it'll come when I least expect it.

mc - good advice, i'll be intentional about getting more 'negative splitting' into my training. of late, that has been my plan in most easy running, pace intervals, cruise intervals, and long runs, but not so much in speed intervals or tempo runs - maybe that's the missing component in translating it into race strategy.

95/85 huh? MacMillan would not approve. Zoom!

I finally had a chance to read this report. Congrats on the new PR! And I'm with the others who think sub-20:00 is definitely doable for you. I think the wind messed you up on this attempt.

There are several school of thoughts on how to run a 5K successfully. My own experience echoes what mc stated. My best races have been the ones where I did run negative splits. The 5K's that I've run where my first mile was too fast have been really ugly. A typical 5K for me is 6:30, 6:20, 6:10, + 0:35 sec, adjusted for hills. The hardest part of this is not getting caught up in the excitement of the start and hitting the first mile at 6:00. The 6:30 pace feels like 8:00 for the first half mile, but that's just the influence of adrenaline. Without my Garmin, I would go out too fast every time!

Keep working Bty, you'll get there. We're all cheering for you.

Lab - Adrenaline probably explains my 5:57 new 1-mile PR I ran in the first mile of September's 5k. Ouch. Even then I ran a 20:42 though (mile 2 was the worst one there). Maybe if I committed to doing more 5k's each season, instead of attempting to break 20 almost as an afterthought after training (and racing) longer races all season long, I'd have an even better chance, since then I would really get the racing aspect of it 'down'. But training for 5k's has just gotten very pedestrian for me. I like the Half Marathon plan I followed the past two years.
