in Italy.

Some of you may remember that at the end of January someone attempted to park their van in my garage by entering via the non-existant door in the side. Massive damage to the structure, much angst over it.

At the time I thought that things were fishy with the guy who claimed that he'd done the deed. There being no witnesses I couldn't actually prove that he was covering up for his pregnang daughter by claiming that he'd been driving. He didn't have his wallet with him when we were exchanging info, and had his daughter go to his house up the lane to get it. She was all weepy and apologizing and said "I thought you'd be so mad..." etc. etc. He claimed that he'd skidded and lost control - the cop said that there were no skid marks.

At any rate my next door neighbour is a contractor and he helped me secure the garage that night. In the process he beaked off a bit to the guy when he dropped by to make nice with me. He wasn't rude or anything but he told him in no uncertain terms that he thought that he drove too fast in the lane (he does) and that this was a consequence. The guy retreated. And I just let things like the way they were. I spoke with my insurance about my doubts but they didn't care - the guy's insurance would pay.

Then the campaign began.

My neighbour parked his van in a green space between our houses. By-law officers were by to visit my neighbour and were measuring things. Nothing came of it, but 2 weeks later he got another visit. He was told he had a week to have a plan in place to build a garage and that the size of his shed had to be reduced by 150 square feet. They said that there'd been a complaint by "a neighbour". Nobody on our cul-de-sac cared - we're all pretty close, so suspicions turned to buddy boy up the lane.

He got a permit and had some stakes put into the ground. The guy from up the lane accosted the missus and told her that she should complain because our neighbour was building on our property. The missus told him that we knew exactly where our property was and that we had no problem.

The neighbour had to cut some trees to accommodate the new garage and buddy boy was by making all nice and asking for the wood. My neighbour said that it was all claimed.

Garage gets buit. My neighbour asks us if we mind him parking his van in the lane, part on his property and part in the lane. It doesn't impede us at all, and he asks the garbage and recycle people if they mind - they have no problem getting their trucks around. But neighbour gets a visit from by-law officers again and a ticket for having an over-weight vehicle in the lane (actually the ticket reads that it was parked behind our garage - so there's a technicality). Neighbour goes and weighs his truck and re-registers the weight so that there won't be a problem. By-law comes by again and again, but see that the vehicle is not overweight.

In the meantime buddy boy asks my neighbour if he will come by and give him a quote on shingling his roof. Neighbour demurs politely.

Last week the cops came by and gave him a ticket for impeding traffic in the lane. He called them back to ask about it and ended up in a very long conversation with the cop's partner. The cop implored him to "just move the van". Told my neighbour that they were being deluged with calls about my neighbour from a very irate caller.

My neighbour said that he had an idea as to who it might be, and while the cop didn't confirm or deny anything when he mentioned the address of buddy boy the cop said "Well, that gentleman has a number of priors..."

So my neighbour doesn't know what to do to stop this. It seems like the little weasel is trying to make nice while causing all sorts of sh*t. Neighbour wants to take out a cease and desist, but with no proof there's nothing to go on.

Hmmmm...this has Taunt-the Neighbour written all over it!

Either come up with a brilliant plan to drive him crazy, or become as law-abiding as possible & drive him to sher boredom.

Personally, I'd install a strobe light inside the garage & keep it going 24/7...nothing ilegal about that & there's absolutely no purpose...but it'll keep him busy.

We actually thought that my neighbour might legally park in front of his house a few hours a night.

Reminds me of years ago when HVSRy had their steam locomotive parked in an engine house. It was an unused stall, they paid rent and all. But one guy was pissed that a "useless" steam engine was taking up valuable space. He threw a bolt threw the headlight and broke it. Uh, not like you can run to Kmart and buy a replacement... Well, the cops found out about it. Of course they couldn't get him for breaking the headlight because no one actually saw him do it. So, the cops got even. The poor bugger was pulled over for every possible infraction you can imagine. Laws that you didn't even know were on the books. Stuff like proving he had a working jack and spare. Not sure if they actually wrote tickets for anything. They just made his life very miserable. Sounds like that's what the cops need to do with the guy causing all the problems for your neighbor!
