Physicist on Valentine's Day

Every Friday after work, a physicist goes down to the ice
cream parlor, sits in the second-to-last seat, turns to the
last seat, which is empty, and asks a girl, who isn't there,
if he can buy her an ice cream cone. The owner, who is used
to the weird local university types, always shrugs but keeps
quiet. But when Valentine's Day arrives, and the physicist
makes a particularly heart-wrenching plea into empty space,
curiosity gets the better of him, and he says, "I apologize
for my stupid question, but surely you know there is NEVER a
woman sitting in that last stool, man. Why do you persist in
offering ice cream to an empty space?"

The physicist replies, "Well, according to quantum physics,
empty space is never truly empty. Virtual particles come
into existence and vanish all the time. You never know when
the proper wave function will collapse and a girl might
suddenly appear there."

The owner raises his eyebrows. "Really? Interesting. But
couldn't you just ask one of the girls who comes here every
Friday if you could buy HER a cone? Never know -- she might
say yes."

The physicist laughs. "Yeah, right. How likely is THAT to
happen?"

Received from marty's jotd.

I had a GREAT run this morning. I walked 1/2 mile and then ran 3.2 miles and I just felt wonderful, like I could have kept going for another 2 or 3 more miles at least. But I was short on time, and also I didn't want to possibly court another injury, so I slowed down and walked another 1/2 mile. But everything was good -- the rhythm, the breathing, even my heartrate was a bit lower than usual. So nice to have a good energy that clicked perfectly for a change, since most of my recent runs have been difficult.

Enjoy Valentine's Day everyone! Today I'm wearing a bright red dress and very sexy, killer high heels. DH will be thrilled when I get home tonight.

For our romantic evening tonight, I will be wearing Asics 2130s, Adidas socks, RaceReady shorts with an outer layer of warmup pants, a tech long-sleeve, and my wind vest. And I will drive DS up to karate, go to the track, and run 800s while DH drops four giggling girls off at Guides. Then I go to the dojo, pick up the boy, go to Guide House, pick up the girls, drive the neighbourhood whilst casting young ladies out of the van at random intervals, and go home. And fall asleeeeeeep.

Happy Valentines Day ((((Kicksters))))

Ksrunr, that is pretty funny, probably a true story.

Hey old guy I went back and reread your Tues post, 48" snow shoes! I bet you are sore. My snowshoe outings have done the same to me, it is alot more work than regular running, never could keep my hr in the easy range.

i think I will drive up to the como lake trail head and check out the conditions. Last year this time of the year I was able to run around part of the lake as the trail was packed without a whole lot of snow, this year it will probably take snowshoes, but I think it is possible to do the whole 9 mile loop. Last year I wasn't equipt to make it over a huge ice flow at the inlet of the lake. My snowshoes have stainless steel crampons and rails so I think that will get me over the ice flow to do the loop.

Good runs all, Larry

Happy V-Day Runs and Rests all!

SLOJim, I like the picture! And thank you for your input on the Nimbus 9. I find myself liking that shoe more every time I run in them, and can't understand why alot of people (not in this forum) bash on that shoe so much.

KS, funny story. Reminds me of a lot of guys I know...

Rest day for me but I have to get my allergy shots. It is raining, so it would have been a nice day to run.

Nice run, Riley!

LaT, glad to hear the back is doing better. Isn't always the silly stuff that can cause the most damage?

Mustang, you are such a romantic! hehe. I'll be spending Valentine's evening doing yoga with Bob but MrC and I will celebrate V Day with a nice dinner on Sat. night. I do have a little gift to give him tonight (running related, of course!)

I have never had any motion sickness trouble and I adore all those wild rides at the amusement parks. I can go upside down, corkscrew, drop 30 stories, spin, and I even like how airplane turbulence tickles my tummy but I have the WORST darn time on a treadmill. This morning I ran 3 miles on one at the gym, got off to finish the final 2 miles on the track, and I felt like I was half drunk staggering around the oval. Thank God no one else was up there. I can't believe how discombobulated it made me feel.

5 miles total -- will probably skip Pilates today so I can check out the big sale at the ski store

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone! Still not running, and won't be at least until next week, once we're away in the Caribbean. I finally get to see my PT this afternoon, after he stood me up yesterday (claimed he was stuck in the wrong time zone ??, but as a result I need to cancel my CPR recertification course for the afternoon. Actually, I need to be spending all my available hours packing for our trip (doing laundry and ironing too), but I figure a few extra minutes spent here "centering" myself isn't going to do any harm).

Taught yoga class this morning, and lucky for me, I got to have Valentine's Day as my theme. Actually, I talked about how many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop (yeah, I'm really corny, I know). Focus of the class was to go into the midline, into the heart, which is really our core -- just like that sweet spot that's in the center of a Tootsie Pop. And so yeah, Choovie, I taught crow pose (just found your question back on Monday's thread). Firefly's still somewhat out of my reach at the moment, but I think that's primarily due to my hip injury now. Once I'm balanced again I'll be able to effectively work that pose more and get some answers back to you, as well as attempt teaching it.

But while I'm thinking about it... in crow, you need open hips and a strong sense of hugging into the midline, which in turn will allow you to reach the heart area forward, which is the same for firefly. For crow you work with muscular energy to draw in with the arms and legs, and then from the core you extend out through the heart. In firefly you extend out through the legs and feet as well (organic energy) while still squeezing in, so you need a strong upper to lower body connection, I guess. Having a misaligned pelvis and slippy sacrum would certainly get in the way of maintaining that connection, which is probably why I'm having trouble with this pose, though I know I've "gotten it" in the past, even if it was just for a moment. My realignment appointment is this afternoon. Wish me luck!

^5 Riley on your run! It's so cool when you're in your groove, ain't it? Now if only we could bottle that feeling and take it everywhere with us in life. Enjoy your date tonight!

Good going on the 10 years, SteveP. And here's to the start of the next 10, and forever on.

Cute story ksrunr. My son the engineer would appreciate that.

((LaT's back, even though it's feeling better))

MustangSally, your evening sounds quite...uh, full. Enjoy the sleeping part!

It's a beautiful and bright sunny day here, such a nice contrast to the dark and gray rain/slush mess of yesterday. Good running to all!

Oh, I almost forgot... I gave out Tootsie Pops to everyone in class today, while they were in savasana. So here's a sweet treat at the center for all of you, in my favorite flavor!

Nice runs this morning!

15 challenging miles. Challenging because of the aftermath of yesterdays combo ice/rain storm. Had to hug the side of the road and stop alot for cars to safely pass. How come when no other traffic is coming they can't cross the double line? Annoying! Anyway, got it done and the sun will hopefully melt it all away!

How about the Uconn men's basketball team! What a game last night! Go Huskies!!!!!

Happy Valentine's Day to everyone!!

OM, I, too, suffer from a sacro-ilial joint that would rather be "out" than "in." I hate the thought that I'll be beholden to a physio or chiro for periodic re-alginment for the rest of my days.

Are there poses that are specifically contraindicated for SI problems? On the other hand, are there movements or poses that you find help to stabilize the pelvis? Have you come across good self-care routines?

I would like to take more of an active hand in trying to keep things aligned. I once asked my chiro whether she could teach me the adjustment that I've experienced so many times so that I could teach it to The Scot. She laughed and said that she was still working on teaching it to *her* husband and didn't think we'd have much success with one more intermediary in the teaching chain.

Ran this morning. About 1 mile into the run, I hear footfalls approaching quickly behind me. Normally I would pick up the pace withut looking back to either loose the person, or make them work to get by. Today was different. Since this is a recovery week, I decided to just keep my pace and do my own thing. Well, beside me pulls up this lovely lady in her late 20's. She takes her ipod ear buds out and asks how far I'm going and if she can join me; she tells me that she doesn't get to run with company very often (I can fix that ). Of course I'm not going to turn her down. We chat she tells me she is running 6-8 this morning and I ask her if she is training for anything. Turns out she ran XC and the mile for USC, which explains the ease at which she caught me. We continue along at what is becoming a tempo pace for me, and I'm trying to keep the breathing light and easy; there is no way I'm going to let on that she is starting to work me. We just continue to chat and then had to go our separate ways....ahhhhh.....to be young again.....
