In Honolulu we have a series of runs in the fall that are set up in part as marathon training for the Honolulu Marathon in December. It's called the marathon readiness series and you can sign up for all 5 races for 70 bones, so what the hell. The races are 15k, 20k, 25k, 30k, and last was today's Val Nolasco Half Mary.
I've run all but one of the races with so so results. I'm new to distance running, so I'm not being too hard on myself for being slow yet. But, today's race was the first one that I felt strong through the finish and exceeded my goal, so I'm stoked, but I started out with some doubts.
It started raining last night around midnight with lightning and thunder, which we get here about once every couple years. I fell back to sleep thinking, "oh well, at least its now and not during the race," only to wake to thunder and a continuous downpour.
By the time I got to the start I was soaked to the bone, so I hung my shirt in a tree because it just seemed like extra weight.
We started off with more thunder and lightning for the first couple miles. The hard part was avoiding puddles, and I found myself ankle deep a few times along the way. The best part was that it really helped keep me cool, so hydration was less of an issue.
I started off a little too fast I think, with my HR into the 140s in the first mile. I tried to ease off, not wanting a repeat of some prior long run breakdowns. Once I got onto the highway at about mile 6 I started to feel pretty good and picked up the pace a little. At mile 9 my HR was still in a comfy zone so I picked it up a little more. By mile 11 I figured WTF, and picked it up some more and even sprinted into the finish.
I finished in 1:50.49, something like an 8:40 pace and almost 10 minutes faster than my goal.
I'd been running most of my long runs and races around 9:30 to 9:45 paces, so I'm not sure where that came from, but hopefully this bodes well for my upcoming marathon.
Man, sometimes running feels so good.
