Howdy Umsteaders

217 checking in.

The trails are in wonderful shape.

Beautiful weather today - mid 80's. YAY for warm sunshine :)

I have seen two long range forecasts - one says wet and 50's. Another says dry, sunny and upper 60's. Please be dry please be dry please be dry.

There was pollen on vehicles for the first time - may not be too much fun if you suffer from allergies.

Also, I'm pretty sure I noticed deer-fly today, which seems incredibly early - but if indeed they were deer-fly, remember DEET and lighter colored clothing (partcularly your hat).

See y'all soon - let me know if you have any local questions!

#46 here.

I'm so ready to leave the Northeast and head south for a long weekend. I'll take weather report number 2, if it's all the same to you. Or better yet, a little warmer like a high of 70, low of 50-55. That would be perfect. Ran it one year in the rain. Not nearly as much fun or as social. People were kind of hunkered down and nobody was outside at the s/f aid station. But that was my fastest year--less hanging around talking, more running.

About the pollen: the first year I ran there, I could hardly breathe and there was yellow pollen on all the cars and on the ground. If anyone is prone to allergy or asthma, bring your inhaler.

My one local question: I'm staying at the (new) official race hotel, which I think is a Hampton Inn (but not the same one as last year). In past years, I could walk from the old hotel to an Irish pub a few hundred yards down the road for a delightful black and tan on Sunday afternoon after a little nap. Is there a similar establishment that sells adult beverages in close proximity to this year's official race hotel (if you know)? If not, I may have to pack a few of my own.

See everyone next week.

The new hotel is in Brier Creek, which is a big shopping mall off of Glenwood Ave. I think the old hotel (an older Hampton that may or may not be a Comfort Inn now) was also in the same mall - so you probably are in the same vicinity.

There is a 50% chance that I do not know what I am talking about though.

Mid 70's is ideal for me. Especially now that I am getting some 80+ degree running in.

The old hotel was farther down 70 east (Glenwood Avenue?), about 3 miles past the park entrance, next door to Fat Daddy's and a greek restaurant. This hotel looks like it's right next to the airport. There must be a place to get a beer in Brier Creek, but probably not as homey as the old Irish bar.

Good luck Umsteaders!! I should be out there to cheer you on - in fact, I would really love to pace someone, but am still looking into childcare for my daughter that weekend. Umstead is practically in my back yard (I'm in Morrisville) so I run there nearly every weekend, and just had the pleasure of running the Umstead marathon earlier this month! I am hoping to dip my feet into the ultra world soon, and hopefully can at least do the 50 miler next year!

Anyway! To answer the question about the proximity of 'adult beverages', there will be plenty at Brier Creek - Brixx Pizza, Carolina Ale House, etc. There are a ton of restaurants to choose from, so you should not go thirsty

Enjoy your race!!!

Thanks for the info. You should come out and check out the race if the weather is nice. If you are thinking of doing an ultra, the best way to get a feel for it is pacing, although you may find the pace is very slow when you pace a regular runner (as opposed to the elites) who has already done 50+ miles. I had my sister pace me once at the Headlands 100, and I think she was amazed at how long it took to cover the last 25 miles. It was more of a hike than a run at that point.

Wow, # 4, amazing!!! While I would love to pace, it's looking less and less likely as it sounds like it would have to happen during the night hours, which would mean overnight sitter. That may be a bit more problematic. However, I do have someone watching my daughter in the a.m., so I am planning on being out there running, and hope to see some of you all.

Good luck!
