It's going to depend on which ultra you have in mind.

A flatish 50K -- a marathon training plan will probably be fine.

A mountain 100 miler? Totally different story.

Can you provide a bit more data?

Adam.. Step 1 is to have CLEAR goals in terms of what you want to accomplish. Within these parameters you pick a distance you want to start with, then you pick a race that provides that distance.. and then... you take the information about that race.. Terrain, elevation, aid, time cut-offs, etc to craft a training plan...

Step 2: Don't ever type the word "like" as you have above again... I hear enough of that at the College.. I don't want to have to read it too.

Adam, it's the question of the distance you want to run and the elevation change/course surface, etc. that has us unable to provide a lot of information for you. But the good news is that you don't have to do anything radical. I ran my first 50 miler on a good aerobic base of training and a lot of junk food and soda--M&M's, potato chips and Coke, and some water and PB&J sandwiches. A 100 miler takes some more thought, but none of it is rocket science.
