For 10 weeks, Mark Haub, a professor of human nutrition at Kansas State University, ate one of these sugary cakelets every three hours, instead of meals.
It is well known that all kinds of crazy diets works. The key is that the weight just comes right back because they arent sustainable (ie nobody can live on twinkies forever) and some of these diets can cause long term health consequences if undertaken for too long because of nutrient deficincies.

Calorie reduction is key but so is eating a balanced (nutritional) diet.

Well yeah, whether you gain or lose weight is dependent on nothing more than Calories In vs Calories Out. It doesn't matter where those calories come from.

So the fact that he lost weight like this isn't surprising. What I think was more surprising was farther down the article where it said that his cholesterol numbers imporved.

Altoids is right; it sounds disgusting. I guess some people will do anything to prove something that's basically obvious anyway.

It's definitely a calories in/out thing. I think this is a slap to the food police who advocate banning one kind of food or another because it is fattening.

It's not the food itself necessarily, it's the quantity.

It's funny, but when I was a size 1, due to an illness, my numbers were all messed up. (cholesterol/etc) Now, that I am not an optimal weight, (read: heavier than I should be) my numbers are perfect--even the doc says I will live to 100.

Well, apparently he DID eat vegetables and take a multivitamin. It's interesting, though, that his good cholesterol went up, and his bad went down.
