Morning peeps!

I am running a little behind schedule this am, but will head out for a short 40 min run soon.

Kath - the puppy is my cousin's new baby. He is 8 weeks old.

Litch - wow, that movie looks amazing. Congrats again to DS! That is so cool.

bOb - sounds like your planned run was more of an MP run than tempo? Seems to me your tempo pace would be a lot faster than 8:10-8:15 (and probably less miles)?!

Congrats to Ann for finishing her first semester of liberry school.

Morning. I opted to catch up on stuff at home instead of a trip to the gym this morning. Even with an hour of uninterrupted time, I didn't put a dent in what I need to do. You know, the stuff I can't delegate, I just really have to make the time. Ick. I hate it when that stuff piles up.

Well yeah, tempo pace used to be faster than that. But I've slowed down significantly in the last 6 months or so. Basically, since I turned 40. So I would have been happy just to keep 8:15. But I didn't even come close to that. I've mentioned previously that I read somewhere that adult runners can typically expect to peak about 7 years after taking up running, no matter what age they start. And I'm just beyond that 7 year mark, so there might be something to that. And thus I might need some "external" boost to stay where I've been. I don't plan on using PEDs, so my two choices are probably increased mileage and/or losing some weight. I don't think I can increase the mileage much without pissing off my wife, so it looks like I'll have to focus on weight loss, for the first time in my life, really. I don't know how serious I am about this, since I've thought about it a million times before. But I guess it just take too much effort to haul almost 200 pounds of 40 year old ass around very quickly...

Anyway, I feel pretty crummy again this morning, kinda like I did yesterday morning. I won't use it for an excuse for last night's slow run, since I felt fine last night. But this morning my throat is really scratchy and I've got phlegm coming out my pores. Fun stuff...

3-4 months? They go all sort of wacky. One will stand half way up (the top will be bent to the side), the other will be down. Then they switch - the one that was down will be half way up, and the one that was half way up will go back down. Then they both point left. Or right. They're all kinds of goofy for a few months, and then BOINK! They stand straight up.

I'll have to take pics of the process. It's funny.

bOb - well for clarification, I wasn't picking on you for running too slow - almost the opposite. I have read that certain paces can be very helpful to improving fitness, such as the correct tempo pace (LT) and VO2Max pace. But if you are running outside those threshholds, yet faster than necessary, you can break yourself down some without achieving much (if any) benefit. So maybe you should force yourself to hit pace for less miles (or cruise intervals) rather than beating yourself up at a fastish pace for 10. Food for thought.

Speaking of food, I just made a salad for lunch (WLC is on!). I made blanched brussels sprouts to go in it and had extras so I am having them for breakfast. Yummy.

My run was good. It was 33 degrees and pretty awesome outside. I hit my paces, but my legs were a little clunky/loggish.

Feel better, Bob!

Congrats, Becca!

Hope D is on the mend, Maria. How's dad, btw?

Brandy, how's mom?

Life's been really busy -- but I got my trimester grading/grades done, so now I can breathe a little in that area. I am moving along with house renovations, though, and that means my house is a MESS -- which doesn't work with having people over next week. Yikes! The major reno stuff will happen after the holidays, but I've been doing little stuff along the way. At least I finally decided what floor to go with!

Oh - and I've been running. That part's fine. Did 6.5 miles yesterday after work. Will do something today. I like and don't like not having a training plan.

Bob - I would agree with Mindi on your tempo pace. Heck, you are faster than I am and I run my tempos at about an 808 or so. You are right though, weight reduction would have the biggest impact. I am a dummy when it comes to this stuff so I took a predetermined path and have had success. Just a thought

Speaking of food, I made another batch of chicken stew last night, this time with butternut squash instead of potatoes and I added in chopped spinach. YUM

Lora - she is doing ok. She had chemo again last week and it just makes her so darn tired. She is also having to have blood transfusions almost every time as well. I wish I was a match on blood type.

I along with my brother, sil and niece are spending over a week at home over the holidays. I hope that cheers her up.

Morning, friends. I went to 6:30 Mass this morning because it was being said for my dad. It only lasted about 20 minutes, so I'm thinking of going on T/H and then hitting the gym for cardio since I'm meeting with the trainer on MWF. I would have done that today, but I'm giving a final exam at 10:00 and I wanted to make sure I had enough time. Thinking about it, I'm sure it would have been fine, but I didn't want to be late, just in case. I really wanted to stop and pick up fast food breakfast, but I resisted and had yogurt and berries and some cereal. Pretty tasty.

Speaking of food, I thought many of you would appreciate today's Woot shirt:

First of all, I used to do my tempo pace around 7:50 - 7:55. But I haven't been able to keep anything close to that for a while. And Brandy, I doubt I'm faster than you now. If my recent long runs are any indication, I won't be breaking 4 hours in Arizona. Even though I've been feeling fine and healthy (for the most part) since a brief period of malaise after Utah, I just seem to be slower than I used to be. It's not like I believe that 40 is a magic number that suddenly made me slow, but my slowdown sure does seem to coincide with my 40th birthday. Surely just a coincidence, but it is what it is. I'm not freaking out over this because my three primary goals are to have fun, do something healthy, and finish the 50 states. Being a little slower doesn't really hamper those efforts.

Second, you guys know that I've been winging this for a few years now. I don't follow a set training schedule and I have no idea what my VO2Max is. Would it help if I was more regimented? Yeah, probably. But then it would start to seem like work. I want this to be fun. I know that might not make sense to some people, but screw it. It's going okay for me so far, and hopefully I won't whine too much about it.

All that said, I would like to drop a few pounds. I've always wanted to drop a few pounds. But I also always wanted to eat what I wanted. I'm entering this mini weight loss challenge to see if that motivates me at all. But I won't be surprised (or upset) if it doesn't.

the past few days have been filled with drama. without going into too much detail, i had a puking toddler, a dog with unexplained explosive diarrhea and on my birthday, i spent the first half at the city morgue and the second at DH's boss' home for a holiday party. not exactly what i'd call exciting but duty calls.

i'm taking AK to see santa either tomorrow or wed and i think theres about a 80% chance she'll scream and cry as she didn't do too well with the disney characters either. is it horrible i'm sort of looking forward to that picture? for posterity's sake??

Morning peeps.

I knew I was remiss yesterday: Prae, hope things work out in NY, and (hugs) today in general.

Maria, I hope Mr. Kittay is doing better. Trixie sends hugs.

Brandy, I'm glad you'll spend some quality time with your mom this holiday. Continued thoughts to you and your fam.

Happy very belated Birthday to KP and Missy!!!!

Ok, so, I went to PT last night and the trainer told me I had my choice of warm up. Since I'm not fond of the rower and jumping rope's bothering my back...I opted to run (this is the first time he's let me run.) 1) man, I do sorta miss it; 2) man, he has a swank treadmill; 3) man, I'm slow. :) All in all, a good workout.

I've been good about practicing on my guitar just about every night, and played for about a half hour last night with out even noticing the time. "Played" meaning tried to remember chords and tried to get them to sound right and eventually, played the chords for Silent Night (which amounts to 3 chords, each played 3 times total. this was not a crowning achievement!)

I had sort of a sh!tty morning, nothing major but as soon as I walked in this morning, my assoc dir stopped me to talk about a report I'd updated a couple of weeks ago and to show me all the mistakes in it. I would have rather had had that talk after my coffee, but alas....sigh. I'd say I can't wait til Christmas when we'll have time off, but even that's up in the air again this year. We know we have to work but we don't have our schedule in place yet, and it SUCKS since the U is closed, but we're at the beck and call of the President and have to be here because he travels during intercession and we have to provide him with research for his meetings.

Happy birthday Colleen! December birthdays kick ass.

I'm a mix of pissed and happy right now: went to the Y and did 30 minutes of intervals on the elliptical. Ankle felt great and it was great to get a workout in - that's the good. The bad? spent 20 minutes tearing apart the house trying to find my heart rate strap for my garmin. I used it last Thursday, thought I put it in its usual spot but it's nowhere to be found.
