Hey All,

Since I haven’t been around much, I figured I’d give you an update on “me.” Boston Marathon training has been going “ok” but I’ve noticed my runs haven’t been so great. I did a 5k the other day and after a nice easy 2 mile warm-up, I turned things up and about .75 miles in, I couldn’t breathe and got some chest pains, my HR also spiked. This made me walk and slow down until my hr came down and I could breathe again. I then started running again and I could manage a nice easy jog, but anything more made me feel crappy again.. I jogged the 5k and then drank some beer. My wife and friends were worried so I spoke to the Dr at work (I work at a hospital) who said it was prob some exercise induced asthma, but he’d do a stress test and ekg, but not rush me. So, I went to the Dr. on Tuesday before our vacation to Charleston, SC for a wedding where I had hoped to get in my long run. The doc did an EKG, all clear and then had me do an asthma test. It came back mild, so based on what I thought went on with the cold and in the past, I got an inhaler. I also am scheduled for a stress test, but that is being rescheduled.

So, Thursday, I had planned to run 10 mile in the am and 10 mile in the PM to meet moco for a 5k about 6 miles away. However, during my AM run, I was having such a good time, I ran out to about 16 miles, including over the “hill” in Charleston (read big bridge) I then ran a few circles to get to the 16 miles and planned to run a warm-up and easy 5k with MoCo. Well, that didn’t go so well. During the 1 mile warmup, I felt like crap, but figured I could run her pace (slower than mine) and that was a mistake. I also forgot the damn inhaler, and she forgot hers.. yeah, we’re bright. Anyway, at .5, I decided to pull over and run the last .5, then my stubborn streak kicked in. So, I run walked it to what I believe is an all time worst 39 min 5k.. BLECH.. Anyway, I felt ok and ran a good 6+ miles on Sat and a rough 6ish on Monday, but my legs are tired and I walked a lot and we were there for a wedding so I was really tired.

BUT, I’ve got a bit of my mojo back and while I’m doubting I’ll hit my time goal at boston, I know I’ll at least enjoy the day and try to pace myself better than the past 2 years.

So, that’s what’s with me.. now that I’ve got some mojo back, you’ll see more of me. Oh, got home at almost 3AM to NO Heat, but I fixed it this am.

So, I’m gonna try to be back once I get some sleep..

Trainer session tonight. Thougth about running today, too, but I think I'll skip today in the interest of not re-pissing off the right ankle. It's happy right now and I'd just as soon it stay that way.

Adam - now is the time for caution rather than being aggressive with your training. Good luck man.

Raining this morning so everyone headed inside on the treadmills. 15 min WU, 5 min build to moderately strong (~5:42) and then two strides and some recovery. Main set was 5 x 600m (0.4 mi) @ 5 min/mi with 300m (0.2 mi) recovery). Cool down was the remainder of the hour. Felt pretty wiped out, I'm attributing that to being sick all week. Ab felt good, no pain though I was aware of it. 8.5 mi total.

Maybe a swim tonight, maybe not.

Thanks all,

I am being careful, I'm staying away from High Intensity stuff and I'm going to get my stress test soon.. Dr gave me the "I can't tell you it's OK to run," but I'm pretty sure you're going to ignore my warning, but be smart. I haven't had any chest pains besides not being able to catch my breath, so I think it's asthma. If I can only figure out how to take my inhaler right, that would be better.. :)

Adam...be careful, hang in there, and hope you feel better soon!

Did this week's intermediate run with progressive tempo today since it seemed like the best day for it this week weather wise. Really had no expectations for this run since I ran 19 miles on Sunday. Headed out to Comm Ave and "the hills of Newton" and hoped for the best...or at least to get through it. I ran the first half with 9:1 run:walk intervals (and had to stop for *every* traffic light!) and a mid-zn2 HR avg in 1:04:42. It's net uphill out and net downhill back. I ran the second half straight (into the wind), waited for NO traffic lights, in 54:51 and a HR avg in low zn4. I *know* I was totally assisted by the net downhill during the second half! So, 11.06 miles in 1:59:33. The second half had a sub-10 min/mi pace! Am pretty much totally surprised by this AND am glad it's done.

I badly wanted to go to Red Rock Canyon, but awoke to 32 temps over there (west of vegas). 42 to the east (lake meade, race course sat) so I decided to hit Lake Meade and ride some more of the course. I rode the final 7 mile hill (which i now know is a 10 mile hill... great). This course is f-ing hilly. Holy crap. 2 hour ride, made it only 31 miles!! WTF? Was it the multiple 8% inclines? Or maybe the fact there isnt a single foot of flat? Or I lost my downhill mojo? I'm a total wuss, WTF?!? so much time on the trainer I guess not enough outside. I completely wuss, pisses me off. The uncertain terrain, the massive dropoffs feet from my riding, the unpredictable winds, the traffic - man, what a damn wuss. I doubt i hit >30, should have been able to.

Anyway 2 hours, slogged at the end. Low energy, legs tired, total bullshit. Was not happy nor looking forward to the run.

quick change, launched into the run heading to the Hoover dam train tunnels trail. Friggin COOL. Anyway, the run was going well. 20min @ z3 and I did a 10:28 and a 9:18... uphill?! Yeah, I don't think so. The 9:18 was wacked, the gps couldn't cope well with losing signal in the tunnels. They were not long, but there is no way I ripped off a 9:18. My best mile EVER is an 8:36. Anyway, I think it was a 10:30ish - which is damn good and body was holding up. Bizarre considering the sucky ass ride.

I reversed it and finished off z1/z2 (ok and a little z3) along with some stops for photos so I can prepare the case for maybe bringing the kids back later in the week, great family hike. Wondering if ds2 could handle a 4mile hile (8 total) hike. It would be cool to do part, but if we could get all the way to the dam, even cooler. The boys are reading Percy Jackson series and they have a Hoover Dam section. We will see.

oh and later I shot a 12guage, uzi, sniper rifle, hk33 and DS1 shot an AK47, sniper rifle, and SAW fully automatic machine gun. Great times.
