I haven't run since the marathon on Saturday. I've been feeling rather beat up. More so than I should after a marathon. So either I just wasn't adequately trained, or the altitude really did affect me more than I thought it would.

I need to get a Race Report written. Maybe today...

Here's some good news. We have neighbors whose 8 YO (friend and classmate of my 8 YO) has a developmental issue with his lower legs. Basically, as he is growing and the bones in his lower legs lengthen, his feet are rotating outward. He is the embodiment of a happy-go-lucky kid, always smiling and goofing around. He has played hockey and baseball with my 8 YO for years. Last winter, it got to the point where he could barely skate.

His parents made the major decision to go forward with surgery over the summer. Surgery was significant - several bones were broken and re-aligned with an entire hardware store of pins and screws implanted. He has been in a wheelchair for a month. Yesterday, his PT had him up and using a walker.

I won't post the pic I saw, because he is not my kid. But the smile he had should provide some positive energy out there for those who need some.

I also lit 30 votive candles at my church last night on my way home. I started with one for Jack, one for Gus, one for kath, one for Moe, one for her dad, one for kp, one for his dad, etc... Then I figured 30 for the 30's would be good. Good karma to you all.

You are the bomb-diggity, litch. :) Yah for the progress with your neighbor's little one!!

------------------

This isn't good/bad news, but a request for some advice - tapering, specifically! I hope it doesn't seen insensitive to ask for some guidance with everything going on lately.

I have my next HM on 10/16 - 4 weekends away now. (3 LR's away!) While this time around, I've been focusing on increasing my LR's in training, I'll admit that I never have a clue as to what to really do for tapering. Looking at my LR pace now (granted, I know that summer temps & Georgia humidity levels haven't been helping things, it seems that I can't get a LR with a better pace than 11:24, which is not going to cut it for my 2:15:00 goal. (10:18 pace).

I know that the goal pace is going to be tough for me anyway, but right now I'm honeslty not sure if running in the summer has just conditioned me to run really slow lately. Argh. Either that, or my legs are just fried from training. I suppose either/or could be a culprit.

While I know it will be cooler at GR, the only thing that I feel is left within my control, is my taper period. I'd really love some suggestions on a good approach. Training has me running 4-5 days a week now, averaging anywhere from 24 to 32 miles, (shorter runs being 5, 5, 3 and 5, and if I only run 3 shorter runs in the week, the 3 miler is usually the one cut). LR's in the last 2 months being anything from 10 to 15 miles. (average of 13 is probably is a fair number.)

It should also be noted, that while I always plan to, I've done very little speedwork in training. When I plan, it happens on that 3-miler that happens in mid-week. Of course, that's also the run that gets sidelined from time to time.

If anyone has some suggestions on a taper plan (especially regarding what my LR's should be the next 3 weeks) I would certainly welcome them! Thanks!

last night after work I did my long run - the last 20 miler. I opted to run home from work to get as much in with daylight as possible. I went out way too fast, threw in some pace miles at 12-15 (wth was I thinking) and promptly crashed at 17-20.

Morning friends! I actually have some good news:

1. I submitted a paper for review last night! It has been hanging over my head for far too long, and it's such a relief to send it out. Of course, I'm not very hopeful that it will be accepted for publication (at this journal), but it's a start. It can't be published if it's sitting on my computer.

2. My back is finally starting to feel leaps and bounds better. It's amazing what a strong anti-inflammatory, pain pills, muscle relaxers, and 8 hour heat patch and rest will do for pain and discomfort. I actually stood up straight when I got out of bed this morning! After being on my feet to get ready, make breakfast, make lunch, make coffee, etc., the back started complaining, but walking is relatively pain-free and as I sit at my desk, it feels great!

Morning.

I came in here today to check on everyone...and crap...I am in tears at my desk. I really don't have anything to say but I love you all and I am offering you all peace, hugs, warm wishes, love, prayers, everything I can muster!

Not to add to the mood but if you all can muster up some good thoughts for Colin tomorrow, that would be great, he has a hemangioma that has been bleeding and now has a huge pit in it so it is either resolving (we hope) or something a bit worse is happening. Its location makes it tricky so we have an appt with a specialist tomorrow to see what to do next. I am absolutely sure he will be just fine, but I know he is uncomfortable and treating it would be even more so!

Litch great news about your neighbor!!! And what a lovely gesture, thank you!!!

Prae good luck with the paper, I hate those first few days after submission, I always mentally rewrite things!!!

In some fun news...we got a package in the mail over the weekend for Aiden. It was from Woot! shirt but that is all we know. It is the absolute coolest totally geeky shirt and we both love it!!! But there was no sender info. So if it was one of the fabulous 30's, thank you so much for the kind gesture!!!

Ok friends, sending you more love and peace!!!

Morning all. Goodnews Tuesday sounds great, I hope we get some.

Litch - that would have been the whole rack at our church :) Thank you!

Ailerie - I'm certainly not an expert, but my observation from everyone here is that the folks that focus on the nutrition and rest during the taper get the best results. Those things you can more or less control, so it seems like a reasonable place to focus. I hope you get some additional nuts and bolts advice, and I don't think it's insensitive in the least - I'm sure having some concrete things to reply to will be a welcome distraction for those that need one!

Not much here. I did a double yesterday :) Elliptical in the morning and stationary bike in the evening. I have PT at 11:30. The weather has been my favorite for outdoor running, so I hope I get the all clear before this weather passes! I don't expect it for a few weeks though, and I think I'll get C25K type instructions. Here we go again!

I don't think it is insensitive at all. A nice distraction, frankly! :) If I were you, I would do a long run this weekend (13-15). Then next week, run a normal training week, with maybe a slight reduction in mileage (but not quality - e.g. don't slow down during your taper). Hit 12-13 for long run. The next week, cut your mileage by about 20% - maybe add an additional rest day. Do a long run of 12-13. The following week, cut back another 20% and do a long run of 10 miles. Race week, run a couple short, quick runs. The Tuesday pre-race, I would run 5ish with 2 at goal race pace miles. See how it all feels. Then take it easy, rest well, eat well and get ready for your race. I always run a couple shake-out miles the day before the race too.
Wow! I don't think I could ever muster 20 after work - nice job, even if painful. AND, you are done - YAY! You've had a great training season. And BTW, you do look buff! I noticed that in one of your Amelia Island photos. Woot! Recover well today and remember to rehydrate!
I gave out my 2 gift baskets this morning and all the ladies in the office were oohing and ahing over the fall scents. I highly recommend a body butter - they are luscious! And thank you, very much for supporting her business!
