hi guys! back from flagstaff... enjoying the oxygen down here at 2500 ft in tucson.

10mi ez 8:30 pace...warm morning, compared to weekend...

...where it was cold, rainy and cloudy in flagstaff. ah, wonderful! great escape from the bright blazing sun. ran the trails in flagstaff... very nice and extremely convenient. sunday it was rainy and blowing wind, but i think i spotted ryan and sara hall jogging down the other direction... although they were both bundled up (saw both of them in san diego last june with significantly fewer clothes). monday i barely caught up to a young lady running the trails... i was convinced she slowed up... we chatted a little, and then her garmin beeped and then whoooshh... she dropped me like a cement truck. she ran 6:30 for the first uphill mile (i ran 7:30) and then she disappeared into the forest. real weather, nice trails, fast runners and the joys of 7000 ft elevation made for some fun miles up there.

Sounds like some great running MC.

I'll get some oxygenated running this afternoon at about 150' above sea level. Cloudy and warming to 82 degrees today.

Very cool, mc! I often spend a week each summer at our timeshare in VT. I swear training even at that altitude gives me a boost we I return to sea level.

We had our first measurable snowfall last night and through the morning. Not much, 2" or so, but enough to make surfaces slippery and cars undependable. So I opted for the safety of the TM and did 8 miles, mostly GA, but finished the last two at 7:45. Felt good. Nice sweat. I'm hoping to return to the streets tomorrow.

My heart is bursting for the econo clan. This must be unbearable for those parents.

Welcome home, mc. Sounds like some good times up in the thin air. "she dropped me like a cement truck" oh man, would've loved to have seen that!

Nice timing for your first snow, Mike! Welcome to winter, right? Drive carefully in that stuff.

Happy Solstice!! 3 hours and 42 minutes of daylight today, although that's a funny term because we get more "light" than that. But that's from sunrise to sunset, and those are both a glorious display of colors, shadows and light for a good hour or more on either side. So, it's not so bad, really. BUT I am so excited to be on the gaining side of things after today. Well... maybe after tomorrow (I think we sit pretty unchanged for a couple days).

Another gym workout at lunch in store for me. We're going out to a wine tasting tonight (zinfandel, yum!) and my treadmill is still in "lube me" mode. Treadmill Doctor order should be here tomorrow!

My heart is heavy for the Econo clan, too.

The new web-only issue of Running Times has a great story about how running through winter requires the right attitude, and I think you'll like it, Erika, especially the part about John Aerni-Flessner, living in rural western Alaska.

Thanks, Opie. And I consider rural western Alaska much in the same way you guys think of me here in Fairbanks. Desolate is about the best adjective that comes to mind... I'd be wanting more than a cup of tea after being out there.

5 miles at lunchtime. No garmin today, but I ran a route that I know is 5 miles. 48 minutes. One shoe covered in mud at about mile 2. guess that little puddle on the chip bark path was deeper than I thought.

Ran 11 miles today at my easy pace (10:09) and I have to admit, I did chick one old guy trotting along on the bike path. Obviously I don't really count that as much of a victory.... As for oxygen depletion, when the 30+ mph winds hit, it did take my breath away at times....

Enjoy your wine tasting, Erika! Zinfandel is one of my and MrOM's favorites.

Opie, I'm still waiting for my hard-copy subscription to Running Times to start. But I'll read your article in a moment, thanks for the link. A thought did occur to me today when I was out in the cold and the wind: every run is a journey of the self. Well, it seemed more profound when I was out there pounding the pavement, and it worked as a very nice mantra to get the miles done...

Adding my continued hugs, prayers and good thoughts for Econo and Ben and family to the collective. Peace to all.

McsolAIR, I'm getting a headache and my chest is thumping just thinking about Flagstaff. I don't do altitude well. I spent a year in Alamosa and it took me about 3 months to start feeling decent.

Opie, I raced all last winter and for the most part really didn't enjoy it so I doubt the Running Times article will inspire me. Give me a 90° day anytime over anything 35° and under!!

Today was a tempo progression until I couldn't go any further which turned out to be 3.66 miles in 40 minutes. (10:55/mile) Heartrate was 164. After a recovery I did another 1.67 miles in 20 minutes. Total 5.33 miles in 60:00 3400 ft elevation gain. Probably going to take tomorrow off for recovery.

Not Alaska-cold today but not a record-high like yesterday. In other words, IRC. I'll just let the data speak for itself.
