Long Version:

2007 Tromptown Runs are held in conjunction with the start of the DeRuyter Fireman’s Fair. DeRuyter is a small hamlet located in rolling hills and farm land about 15 minutes from my home. This is a low key, old fashioned run in the country. The late entry fee was $15 and the t-shirt was an extra $5.

The plan was to use this as a mid-length training run. The night before the run my DW threw down the gauntlet and bet me our standard $1.00 that I couldn’t run a 9 m/m pace and that my competitive side would win over and that I would probably wind up PR’ing. I accepted her bet and reassured her that I would run my planned pace.

I arrived at the race start and locked a 9 m/m pace into my Forerunner and felt confident that I could hold myself back. The temperature was only about 75 but the humidity felt like it was off the scale. Part of me was happy that it was so humid because I suck in the humidity and that would slow me down and ensure my victory. Then I bumped into a buddy of mine. Oh no. The guy does all kinds of endurance sports and he’s using this as his long run (he’s already run 4 miles). I tell him that I’ll be running slowly and he tells me his planned pace is 8:20’s. Slow but not slow enough. Oh no.

Well, for most of the race we ran 8:00 to 8:15 miles. I finished a few minutes under 2 hours only because of my stops at the aid stations and the fact that I walked/shuffled in the last ½ mile. The RD (a buddy of mine) came running up to me 75 yards from the finish and put his hand on my shoulder and asked me if I was all right. I assured him that I was and sprinted the last 50 yards for effect.

Overall I had a blast. I talked a lot, ran a little, walked a lot, saw a lot of friends and made some new ones, drank a lot of water, visited with the volunteers, ate a freeze pop while “running”, shower after the run, and enjoyed the food and a beer at the fair afterwards. Twenty minutes after leaving the fair I was enjoying a Long Trail Double Bag at home.

I failed to run the 9 m/m pace, but $1.00 was a small price to pay for the fun I had. It’s nice to take it easy once and a while and enjoy the scenery.

Good job and nice report. I know your pain. I'm going to run a full marathon as a training run and 9:00 mm pace is the goal for the first half. I"ll have to hold myself back.
