There is a tri here this summer called My Way or the Tri Way, and you can pick the order of the sports...

I've always wanted to do this one... It's a sprint.

What order would you do it?

It's in the summer. I always think I'd do it run, bike, swim. Get the hard part done with while I have the most energy, save the cooling swim for last.

Sounds like fun!! Just a few thoughts:

They put the swim first I think because it could be a real danger to swim when you are physcially exhausted.

Are you going to wear a wetsuit? It could be really hard to put a wetsuit on a sweaty body.

But I really would love to jump in a lake after a long bike and run, just not sure about the logistics.

I think they're ordered the way they are to compensate for increasing fatigue. You want to get the whole swim thing out of the way because of the whole drowning factor. On the bike, there's the crashing factor. On the run... Sure, you can pass out, fall down, bonk... But it's much less deadly. I'll stick with swim, bike run.

Depends on where the swim is held. I love running first and swimming last, but that is always in a pool, with life guards present.

That way no brick feel to the legs, not wet on the bike and cool off with the swim.

If it is open water, I agree swim first becuase of the safety issue. Better to do that when fresh.

Run swim bike, for no particular reason.

One type of race I always thought would be cool would be an out and back tri. Maybe a double Oly. You start out swimming across a lake (or along the shore for reasons you will see later) then biking out 40k, running out 10k, then turning around and going back. So 10k back to your bike, then bike back to the water, then swim. Since as others have pointed out, swimming while tired is way more dangerous than running while tired. So, you swim along the edge of the lake, and are allowed to get out and sit on the shore to rest if you are tired. I figure the field would be so spread out, it would be posible to patrol the water pretty good. And a few volunteers on the shore could follow along. Would take a bit of a special venue, but would be fun. I imagine someone already runs one of these...I haven't had an original thought in years....
