<p>So, you are trapped in a cave a half a mile under the earth for 3 weeks already.  33 of you have survived on very little to eat.  Finally the rescuers have reached you via a 3.6 inch bore.</p>

<p>Your expectations are that you will be able to get out in a short time.  When in reality those up top have not told you it may be as long as 4 months before you can get out.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The rescue shaft that is being drilled is able to accommodate those with small enough waistlines.  Apparently 9 of the survivors are not expected to be able to fit into the shaft at this point.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>How does one not go crazy while waiting to be rescued?</p>

<p>I suppose I shouldn't be making fun.  It's certainly not a funny situation.  It's damn sad.  Ugh.  I think I'd go mad.  Is there any light?  How big a space are they in?  You'd have to discuss bathroom ettiquette and such.  Sleeping arrangements. </p>

<p>No, you couldn't pay me enough to go into a mine.  And I come from a mining town.  They took us down on a mine tour when I was a little kid at our school.  I doubt we went very far, but it felt like we were in the middle of the earth and I remember having a bit of a panick attack when they told us we were actually under the ocean.</p>

<p>I read in the paper that there are several "rooms" that they have access to.</p>
<p>One of them has been designated as the loo.</p>

<p>Apparently, the most senior person there has done a good job of keeping order, and they've all responded to that in terms of initial rationing of food and water and all that.</p>
<p>At least now, they'll be able to get some nutrition down to them, albeit in compact sizes.</p>

<p>I also saw where the folks up top are bringing in NASA people and psychologists and the like to help manage the psychological aspects of the miners' situation.</p>

<p>It would truly be awful, but, much better than being dead, I suppose.</p>

<p>I'm just glad that they appear to be taking actual action to do something for them.....that they're working on tv feeds, communication with the families, etc.</p>
<p>It's certainly not ideal, but the alternative is way way way more NOT ideal.</p>

<p>I think the miners should be told, but I also think they'll be okay.  People have survived being POWs for a lot longer and in some pretty awful conditions and they didn't have people there to help them, encourage them, and give them hope.  Their situation is truly horrible, but they are not alone, they are not cut off from the world, they have help from people who care about them.  They'll be okay. </p>

<p>I remember watching a movie about some French construction workers who were trapped in a German bunker during the war.  If I recall correctly they were down there for years.  In the dark.  I think some of them survived. </p>
