Does anyone carry anything more than a compact camera when they're running? I've done a few short runs with a digital SLR and 18-200 zoom lens in a bum bag and it's been quite comfortable, and have got some good shots that may not have been possible with a compact. However, I'm not quite sure what I can do if I go longer and need to take my hydration pack on my back. Just wondering if anyone has tried any of those camera backpacks with the bumbag bit on the bottom and the regular backpack on the back? Any other suggestions? I'd really like to combine my two passions a bit more effectively.

Thanks

Audrey, I carry a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX33. I got it for my birthday in March so haven't had it very long. It has a 3.6 zoom and I think it is 8 megapixels. I got it at Costco with a $50 off coupon. I like the rubberized paint as it is easier to hold on to with with sweaty hands. It also came with a teeny carrying case. I also like it because I don't have a lot invested in it so if something were to happen with it, sure I'd be disappointed, but it is not like a digital SLR. It takes really great pics for a point and shoot. I like the lithium ION battery too--hate having to buy batteries.

Another option that I take sometimes is my iPhone. It takes pretty amazing pictures for a phone camera.

Good luck in your search!
I've tried to run w/ my Nikon dSLR too, but haven't had much success (in a LowePro Orion waist pack). One of the guys I climb with uses some sort of chest pouch for his camera. I'll ask him what it is next time I see him.

I'd be curious to find a good solution too!

I carry a digital SLR with 2 lenses especially on my longer runs. I use a fanny pack. Don't usually carry more than one water bottle and a water filter. Sometimes I carry the camera on the chest and use a strap over the camera body to hold it in place while running. The strap has velcro and is quickly and easily removed when I take a picture.

Thanks for the replies. I was at Anaconda briefly yesterday and they had Deuter hydration packs with lots of little pockets for snacks and gels, and they've also got a secure pouch at the back for a bicycle helmet. The pouch is big enough for a camera, so I'm going back today to have a closer look with my trail running hubby. I've tried a bumbag (fanny pack over your way, LOL) and it's fine but I wear it on the back - I've taken a few face plants in the dirt and if it was on the front, the camera would be dust. I'll report back again when I've had a closer inspection.

This is the Deuter pack I was looking at. Not the cheapest on the market but holds a lot. The pouch on the back with the clip is big enough to hold my Nikon D100 with an attached Nikkor 18-200 lens.

http://www.trailspace.com/gear/deuter/hydro-exp-6-sl/
