<p>Rabbit and I did our local and annual Toys for Tots race this morning.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>So, last night, she got a scooter and soccer ball and I got an extra large set of duplo lego blocks. </p>
<p>We both resisted the urge to unbox the toys and play with them ourselves. It was hard.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>She did the 10k.....I did the 5k.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The "goal" (in my mind it was a "goal".....versus a GOAL) was to bust it and get a PR.</p>
<p>She said she'd run with me till the course split for the two races, then I would finish.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The course is hilly....but not horribly so. Although, I personally think that the finish is a bit too uphill....but there's really not a good way to finish this race downhill. So, you sort of have to know that you'll be pushing UP to get to the finish.</p>

<p>The two of us plus another friend from the swim team ducked in to the kids one mile as a warm-up. It was rather neat seeing moms and dads with the tiny ones doing the run/walks. It was even neater to see the tiny ones understanding about giving the toys to the race for other kids. Some kids are FAST!</p>

<p>The first entire mile is downhill or easy flat, and then you turn into neighborhoods and go up and down, up and down. At about mile 2.5, the course splits, and the 10k runners take a little loop that then takes them along the 5k course in reverse, and the 5k-ers turn to the finish....at the top.</p>

<p>Neither one of us is 100% yet....but we're better than we were for the marathon. PF is still a bit of an issue so Rabbit was just gonna run. I didn't realize it at the time, but this would be her first timed 10k. She's done PLENTY of them as training runs, but nothing with an official time. Yep, she did a marathon before she did a 10k race. Go figure.</p>

<p>We stayed together through the first mile, then she ended up about 25-50 feet in front of me. I chased her the entire rest of the race. Hills were ok, if slower, but nothing unmanageable. I was breathing hard the whole way.</p>

<p>Rabbit demonstrated a skill I don't think I"ve seen before, too. At about mile 1.5 or so, she was getting hot, so she took off her top layer. This is not the impressive part. The impressive part is that her bib number was on the top layer so she unpinned her number, got out of her top, tied it around her waist, and then managed to repin her number on the next layer all without slowing appreciably. And, without falling. I'm jealous.</p>

<p>Then end of it all had me crossing the finish in 31:47 (1 second PR from the beginning of the summer) and her crossing in just under 61 minutes. She wanted to break 60 minutes, but the clock never ticked over to the next minute, so I'm calling it a 60 minute 10k. I think that's quite a respectable time for a first 10k. </p>

<p>Now, off to brunch, we are STARVING!</p>
