Pretty much going to give the upper body a rest today. I got a lot of good work in yesterday. I'll just run this afternoon.

One weird thing though. Just this week I started lifting one hand while doing the handstands with my feet balanced against the wall and at first that was really tough. This morning I got up, lifted up my right hand and held with my left arm for about 15 seconds, way longer than the first attempts. The right arm stayed about the same time length as yesterday, but that's because I feel some discomfort in my right shoulder, a lingering aftereffect of the frozen shoulder problem I had back in 2003, 2004, and 2005.

So I guess I'm beginning to see why some say doing isometric holds or negatives with the eccentric contraction of the muscle are good for building strength.

From yesterday's thread, Biah, VO2max isn't a percentage. Larry's fine number of yesterday is a measurement of "a relative rate in millilitres of oxygen per kilogram of bodyweight per minute (ml/kg/min)", or basically the rate of quantity of oxygen he is able to consume. Generally, speaking, the higher that number, the faster a person can run, although there are matters of efficiency of consumption and the training to exploit that capacity.

I'd be scared to find out my VO2 Max number. Do they go negative?

Anyway, I ran 7.2 miles yesterday at a 8:48 pace. My legs had felt a little heavy and I thought I was faster than that. Whatever.

Today is a day off. I meeting a couple friends in Hoboken tonight. These are guys I used to work with many years ago, and we still get together every once in a while. So there'll be no exercise for me today, but I will have beer and crappy food...

Hoping to get in another 2.5 after school. Currious to see how 3 shortie runs feel when they are backed up. Got a measely 3.5 on the Tm yesterday evening. I really... did... not... want... to run anything, but convinced myself to at least get that distance in. Hope tonight will feel a little more positive...

Hi all -

Yesterday was a big PLUS - no residual pain from the prior day's elliptical workout! I'm going to be uber-careful for the next while, but I believe this means I will attempt another, perhaps longer, elliptical workout tonight.

Plus the weights and core I didn't do last night.

Unless my friend confirms with me for dinner. Then it's wine and steaks and the workout will be pushed until tomorrow.

Hey, Pacer - I see you're in the Saratoga Springs resort at Disney. For some reason they haven't yet added my street to the features there...
Good runs all!

Hey all.

Heading to the gym for 3 easy miles and then strength training.

Chris - re: the test. The test was a little harder than both that Sand Race and a 5K race. I'd say it was closer to running a 5K but with a little more effort. Fun stuff for sure. My eyes hardly left the timer hoping the minutes would somehow magically speed up.

Nice workout, I'm jealous! Just thinking about that makes my lungs hurt...maybe by the end of the year I could pull something like that off...big maybe.

Larry, awesome with the test. How did they do it? Did they increase speed or incline? Also, did they use the whole mouthpiece breathing apparatus thing? I don't think they have anywhere down here to get tested "for real" for a running VO2 max but it would be cool to know. My neighbor has access to the special bike for that, but since I haven't been riding, I would be terrified to see that number--it wouldn't be too pretty.

Just an easy 6 today, nothing too special. I'll get to that in an hour or so.

Mornin'!

Didn't end up running yesterday. Instead I drove to my sister's to visit and drop off her Christmas gifts. We bummed around all day, went to Arby's for supper. I'll get out this afternoon, though. I want to try my new Garmin out.

I decided I'll probably shoot for a PR in a half this spring instead of training for another full. If I focus on that I think I can do it. Then maybe train all summer for a fall full. As much as I'd love to join everyone in Wisconsin, we just can't afford it. Ah well...another time, perhaps.

Morning all. I feel pretty good after returning to volleyball last night; some soreness that could be residual from my weights workout or the massage on Tuesday night but nothing too craptastic. Definitely running tonight once I get back from Philly.

boB - where you headed in Hoboken? I sure miss it there somedays!

I'll finally get in a run today. I've been wanting to run all week but my schedule wouldn't allow for it. I had conflicts on both Monday and Weds, two of my usual days.

The Iron Yoga was interesting. I need to try to get there a little earlier so I can get a spot up close. It's held in an old auditorium on campus with bad lighting. Basically, she described it as regular yoga poses but with adding dumbells. I used my 2-lb ones which were just right. My right elbow got a little sore but I expect by the last couple classes, I'll move up to my 3-lb set. I had a hard time trying to figure out the breathing, and I spent a lot of time looking around to see if I had the pose right. Still, I was able to do everything she had us do without too much trouble.

I have a QOD, inspired by someone who asked about his wear pattern on his shoes yesterday. Do your shoes show wear in odd places? I have this habit of lifting my big toe when I walk, so I always wear little holes in the top of my shoes right above the toe.

Kris - the biggest difference with breathing in yoga vs. breathing while running is that the former should be done in and out through your nose. While the latter is either a combo of nose and mouth or all mouth. Sounds like an interesting class.

One small fitness brag from this morning. Put 82.4 lbs in the backpack this morning and did a chin up with that. That's a new record for me, previous was about 72 lbs.

The nose thing wasn't so much a problem (though I'm glad I don't have a cold). It was just remembering to take good breaths, and not hold my breath or take just shallow ones. Also, it was remembering when to breathe in/out if she didn't say specifically.
