Hmm. That poor guy must have a massive noggin to hold up if that neck is any indication. And maybe he needs more glute work to keep those shorts on.

Yay, Finn's here!
I did post a link to two flattering and one pathetic photo of Ralph's Stinson Beach marathon debacle.

I did post one snarky remark on the Garmin thread.

Could someone re-cap for the tardy ones?

Millbot - my 5K race on Saturday will be with temps in the low 40's and 70% chance of rain. Your 5K race on Saturday with temps in the low 40's and 0% chance of rain. Wanna switch? . . . I mean . . . too bad you can't experience the nirvana of running in the cool rain like I will be!

UM...Choovie that guy needs to take lessons in using the drawstring in his shorts....and your BP is really low, what did the Doc say about it?

Johnny, I know you are loving your new toy but don't hurt yourself running too much

I ran from the gym to the boardwalk in IRC although dark, nice and chilly and no wind to speak of at all which is odd when you live on the ocean then back to the gym for an hour of weights and abs.

geez choovie, i emailed you that picture of my abs in confidence i don't wanna scare ss off so early in the contest...

but since you guys don't like all my hard-earned ab definition, i'll have to resort to three months of beer drinking and slacking to remove some.

Wow you guys are all pumped up about this abs thing! Guess I better haul my ass down to the floor and do about a zillion crunches.

Tonight after work I walked 1 mile and slowly ran 3 miles on the treadmill. It felt pretty good although I don't like the evening gym culture. Too many highschoolers on their phones preening at each other, and even the music is way too loud. I like it better in the mornings. People are friendly but focused on their workouts and it's much quieter. In any case, tho, it felt good to be singing along silently to my mp3 while my feet pounded along loudly on the treadmill. I was even mostly able to ignore the woman next to me skreetching on her cell phone.

During my career, I have taken many blood pressure readings. I have to say that one random reading doesn't mean much unless someone is symptomatic.

Let's say I'd been monitoring a post-op patient's vital signs all night. When I received the patient, her BP was 110/80, her pulse 82. Next reading, 100/78, pulse 90. Next reading, 90/60, pulse 110... You see what I am getting at?

This patient's BP of 90/60 would be alarming to me because: a) she's post-op b)it is decreasing and c)it is going down while her pulse is going up.

She could be hemorrhaging somewhere.

Or.
Let's say Choovie takes her BP as part of her morning routine.
On Sunday: 95/65
Monday: 100/70
Tuesday: 110/72
Wednesday: 98/68
Thursday: 90/60

Unless Choovie is light-headed when she stands up. Or has other symptoms, maybe she just runs a lower BP than the average person.
Heck, she is one fit lady. And a librarian.

you guys are too serious here...all this ab work and talk of tasteful pictures...hmmmph...

I ran today at the track-my old friend-I;ve missed dearly. She was meaner to me than I expected as I slugged through 4x1200M at a pedestrian tempoish workout that hurt too much to call 'tempo' pace.

Nice abs, MC...You won't get any challenge from me, but I am acurious to see the results of the ab-off!

(Go SS!!)

Welcome, new people! Siera, is that a cardigan welsh corgi you have for an avatar? (I have a lovely little pembroke, and so does Ken).

After spending all day at my kitchen table working, I ran 5 miles late this afternoon. I added another 3/4 of walking for w/u and c/d. Ho hum. Thanks for the well wishes on my kids. It's just garden variety viral stuff, so I'm sure they'll feel better soon.

I'm thinking all the talk (and pictures) of 6-pack abs ought to wear off on me. Just maybe you folks will inspire me to start doing some core work, including those planks SS so highly recommends.

Oh, and speaking of on the side of the road. It's not unusual at all for me to see a lone shoe or sometimes a pair lying in the gutter. I think it's strange because I'm over 40 and have never lost a shoe this way...clearly other people are not so fortunate.

No smartass comments from me as I'm in the serious runner mode today.

SS & Hally - thanks for the concern, I bailed on my planned "speed work" for the day, which was supposed to be this thing I call progressive hills on the TM, mile 1 = 1% grade, mile 2 = 2% etc. as high as I can go, usually 5 or 6, because I wanted to play with my new toy. I intented to switch next weeks tempo with todays hills but my foot hurt in the morning, so I opted for an easy trail run. Occasionally I get PF symptoms if I spend too much time barefoot or run in the wrong combination of shoes & OTC orthodics, but it usually just goes away like it did today when I put on the hardrocks. I kind of think the hardrocks cure just about anything .

This is the first and last time I'll list all this stuff, I just wanted to do it once to see what it looks like. 5.76 easy miles (well some were easy) in the woods. Today I realized I'm now free to run wherever I want, so I started on my usual route and then took off on a couple of side trails & old logging roads I'd rarely run.

Mile 1 11:08 162
Mile 2 9:25 142
Mile 3 9:18 140
Mile 4 9:54 144
Mile 5 10:02 139
0.76 7:14 (9:30) 136

5.76 9:54 140

The end of mile 1 and the middle of mile 4 are up a big hill, 100 feet up in 750 feet.

I've never used a heart rate monitor before, what's up with the 162 in the first mile??? or is that normal?? I have no idea what my MHR is, I know it's not 220-age which would be 163. I'll try to determine what it is the next time I do intervals.

Serious Runner Johnny, it's common for a HRM to give you bogus readings until you start to sweat a little. You can improve your odds of getting good readings by using electrode gel on the sensors. Even then it may occasionally report bogus numbers. If you use electrode gel, it is a good idea to clean the sensors periodically. Mrs. Johnny's toothbrush will do nicely.

Some people claim that water works as well as electrode gel, but that has not been my experience.

Maybe you were just really excited to be running with your new gadget?

Hi FF and Rose! Welcome sierra!

I guess my stolen sproink was returned without my knowledge since it paid me a visit during my run. 5.25 miles at 7:45/mi. I'm not really sure where that came from since I really didn't think I was running that fast. Oh well, I guess it happens occasionally.

I also did a 10 mile bike ride, and my usual 25 - 30 minutes of core/stretch. Thought about throwing in an additional ab exercise, but it didn't happen. I have my system and I was just too much left-brained today to change it!
