I'm trying to help a running buddy figure out why he needs to puke after almost every long run, a long run being defined as 10 miles or 2 hours or more.

He used to have, hmmm, lower abdominal distress after runs of 7 miles or so (1:15:00 +-), but getting him to get up earlier and giving himself more time before running worked pretty good.

On these long runs, he's experimented with
- half-juice, half-water;
- mainly water, a bit of half-juice, half-water;
- all gatorade.

After a recent HM on a very hilly and windy course, he drank almost exclusively water (and maybe 4 oz 1/2-1/2), and he puked at the end again. Probably his worse ever. While he was tired from the effort, it wasn't all out exhaustion since he walked more than he ran the last 5 miles.

I'm thinking that maybe he needs something more substantial to drink than water. Maybe he's not replenishing the electrolytes sufficiently.

Since December when we had a good 10 K base, we've upped our weekly mileage and our long run mileage gradually on a week-to-week basis. The training has gone well, despite the puking.

Any ideas? Experience? Suggestions?
