OK, I am whining, so be prepared. I can't run, bike, or even do the DREADED elliptical due to severe flare-up of ITBS (which has lasted over a week and I think it's time to go back to the doctor), so I have been swimming like crazy. This morning I planned a 2500yd swim and it sucked from the beginning. My cap kept sliding off, goggles kept leaking, some guy got in the pool that can't steer and kept getting in my lane, and then my arm started to hurt. I stopped at 900yds. I learned the hard way with my knee that it's better to cut a workout short than to push through it and really get injured.

So now I can't do anything except sit around and get fat. WTF is wrong with my arm??? It's not the tricep, but kind of in that area.

I'm just hoping it's better by tomorrow.

OK, bitch session over. Thanks for listening.

OK, take a breath. This will pass. I doubt you're gonna get fat by having to take a few days off. You're tougher then this. You'll be fine.

But just in case. Here's some cheese to go with your whine.

Unfortunately, ITBS can last alot longer than a week. I assume you are taking anti inflammitories and doing all the itbs stretches? I went through this a couple of years ago and it took quite a while to get to were I could start increasing my miles again. I have become religious about stretching (along with proper mileage increases) and have not had it since. Hope it gets better quickly.

(((Abb))) Yah, that sucks. I'm sidelined with a stress fracture and had a kick azz swim scheduled. Got in the fishbowl and the swim just was not happening, so I had to bag it. I got out even more pissed off than when I started! No real words of wisdom, just I've been there, and that's where I am right now!

Hey - if you are able to get into Houston to see a Dr, I HIGHLY recommend Dr. John Cianca. He's the medical director for the Houston Marathon every year and is the first person out of over 15 medical professionals I have been to over 5 years that was able to truly help my ITBS.

He prescribes physical therapy and it was like no other PT I had ever done - totally running specific and worked on things I'd never been told to work on before. Turns out my ITBS was due to the fact that my hip turns out too much and is weak.

He is located at Buffalo Speedway and Richmond (basically Greenway Plaza, at Buffalo Speedway and 59) and his # is 713-627-3156. Feel free to PM me with any other questions you might have.

Ack - we've all been there, so go ahead and whine - whatever makes you feel better!! Did your arm start hurting suddenly? Perhaps you pulled something and just need to step back for a couple of days? Sorry to hear about the ITBS as well - do you have a foam roller? Those are supposed to work wonders on that issue. Sometimes the best rest days are the forced ones - for me it seems to put things back into perspective, and brings a new energy to my workouts when I'm finally able to get back at it.

Keep your chin up!

Okay, I re-read my post and now I feel like I total dumbass. I should get a freaking grip on myself. Good Lord!

Anyway, thank you all for indulging me. And I love the cheese, Chris.

I have been doing Graston and ART for the ITBS but didn't take complete rest for it. I am planning to take a whole month off running (or at least enough time for the knee to stop hurting completely before I try to run and cycle again). The arm just started hurting suddenly; I'm sure it's just s muscle strain. I'm using my injury as a way to get really good at swimming; and then the arm thing happened and I got pissed.

Thanks again. Sorry to be a baby!!!

Oh, KC - I have been seeing a physical therapist who specializes in runners. I wonder if she is using the same techniques?? I am going to call her today, for sure!!!

You definitely need to see if they are working on strengthening your weaknesses and that they have identified the root cause of your ITBS. Like I said, mine was from a hip that turns out too much. No amount of massage, foam rolling, ice, iontepherisis, etc is going to help the fact that my hip turns out. 99% of the ITBS treatment out there is basically a band-aid to fix the symptoms, NOT actual treatment of the cause of ITBS. It only took me 15+ medical professionals to learn this, not to mention a countless amount of money.

Yes, my PT has addressed the problem. I have a leg length discrepancy due to my muscles being so tight. She's been working on that with me. But, I didn't take any complete rest so I never let it heal... now I am going to be smart! Thank you!

Hey Abb - first off, feel free to whine away. We're all allowed

And it's amazing how much it it takes sometimes until we get smart about things. My last stint on the DL (the third in about 1 1/2 years), which pretty much took me out of action this whole winter, finally convinced me that I needed to get smart about things. I just can't go rushing back into things like I once did, especially since I got a late start in all this to boot.

Good luck to you - hope your recovery is complete and as quick as it can possibly be

if you have some tightness/imbalance in the muscles in your hips, can't that skew your effective leg length?

(and RS, what the holy hay is your avatar? or don't I want to know?)

Leg length discrepancies are very difficult to understand and measure. It is possible to have a functional LLD due to muscle issues but I would think the muscle stiffness would have to be severe. You really can't know the cause of a LLD without a thorough exam and x-rays. Rest (no races in pain!), stretch the ITB and strengthen the hip abductors and the ITBS should calm down.

I have been resisting an avatar for a while. I'll give it up after 3 guesses sorry for the hijack.
