As much as I love college football, one thing that really irritates me is major Division 1 teams paying smaller schools to come play them in their home stadium for money as opposed to actual sport. In this case it just happens to be UGA. But Georgia Tech does the same thing as do many other universities including Florida. I'm not picking on any one team. Most are guilty of looking for sacrificial teams that are looking for money as opposed to playing the sport.

Who cares if UGA beats South Alabama, or Georgia Tech beats Jacksonville State. South Alabama and Jax State are fine schools in their own leagues but the manipulation by larger schools such as UGA and Tech dangling much more money in front of schools rather than having them play someone their own size and on each one's competitive level takes away for the concept of sportsmanship.

Every now and then such a concept backfires when the proverbial David slays Goliath. But I still think UGA, Georgia Tech, Florida, Alabama, and others should schedule teams their own size.

Of course, Georgia State is looking for another Alabama to play if Florida is interested. The fee is negotiable.

Agreed. When OSU starts the season with non-con games, I rarely watch 'em. Nothing against BGSU, TU, OU but it's rarely a contest. It's more of a scrimmage to get the new guys used to college ball.

Keep in mind it's also a big pay day for these smaller schools, and offers a chance for some kids to fulfill a lifelong dream by playing in the Horseshoe.

As long as these games are scheduled prior to league play I'm ok with it. It gives the little guys a real challenge and the big guys a chance to practice vs somebody else. Yes every once in a great while the big guy took things toooooo lightly and get beat. BRAVO....little guys.

It's when those games are in the 6th etc etc week that I don't like. Why is that happening now?

I think those are happening now since the NCAA expanded the season to 12 games. The Big Boys saw a chance to fill a bye/new week with another home game instead of taking the week off.

If strength of schedule was treated more importantly than wins you'd see PS 33 having to play Little Sisters of Mercy rather than Oklahoma.

I'm with Brutal though as it's kinda like the spring game for big programs and a decent tune-up for the season. Having Georgia State play Alabama in November was pointless except that it probably covered GSU's football budget for the year.

I tend to think if GSU would simply schedule Florida one year, Oklahoma the next, LSU the third, they wouldn't have to charge GSU student's activity fees for the year. But reality is it's not a sport when GSU plays the big guys. That's not to say they may not eventually become competitive on that level but it still doesn't seem quite right.

This happens not just in Div 1 Football but, Basketball also. It's a good source of revenue for the "lesser teams"

It doesn't really behoove the big schools to do anything BUT schedule these types of games. First of all, as you guys point out, the schools would rather get the money from the additional home game every year. If Florida were to play Ohio State, or Oklahoma were to play USC, or (fill in your dream non-conf matchup here), it would have to be a home-and-home, because neither team would agree to one-off road game. So why lose the revenue from a home game?

Plus, for many teams, it doesn't seem worth the risk to schedule a game they might lose. If a team from a BCS conference goes undefeated, that team is almost gauranteed a spot in the national title game. Yes, there are exceptions, like Auburn in 2004. But why add in games with a relatively high risk of losing, when it can really only do more harm than good?

For non-BCS teams, however, (the Boise States and TCUs, for example), they need these games to boost their credibility. Problem is, they need the matchups a lot more than the BCS teams do. The BCS teams have little to gain and a lot to lose, so they don't schedule them. Of course, stories emerged this year that said Boise State was turning down opportunities to play teams like Nebraska, not the other way around. Who knows...

Boise State opens at Georgia this year...kind of a gamble for both programs.

The "we'll play anyone, anywhere, anytime" mentality sounds macho, but in reality nobody is going to do that. Can you imagine the senselessness of a TCU starting off their season with games at Oklahoma, Alabama, Texas, and Stanford...except the coffers would be quite full. :)
