1. Why do you run?

I run because I can. I grew up the fat kid, and I feel better when I run. I started running because a local 5k was being held on my 30th birthday, and I wanted to try it. I got hooked, and the rest is history.

2. What is your greatest accomplishment?

Hmmm... I think finally getting off my arse and going back to school to become a nurse was my greatest accomplishment so far. I used to shy away from hard work when I was younger. I got tired of being disappointed in myself and having nothing to show for my life so far. But I do think my greatest accomplishments in life are yet to come.

3. What is your motto/theme song?

"Bitch" Meredith Brooks. Just kidding. I have a few different songs that I consider theme songs. In my blog on myspace I talk about how I relate to "Have a Nice Day" from Bon Jovi. I use music a lot to motivate and inspire me or get me through tough times.
My motto is another story. I have a bookmark of Winston Churchill's quote "Never, never, never give up". I try not to give up just because stuff gets tough. Life is too short, y'know? I also keep in mind a quote that I saw on a church sign a few years ago - "Bitterness is drinking the poison and waiting for the other person to die". I think of it when I am angry at someone. It helps me to learn how to forgive. In my opinion, holding a grudge does nothing but harm yourself in the long run.

4. How do you deal with bad runs?

When I have a bad run, I usually groan and moan about it for a little while, but then I look forward to the next good run. When I lose my running mojo (which I do occasionally), I try finding a new running route, or I find a race to train for. Eventually I find my mojo again.

5. Do you reward yourself for good runs? How?

I don't reward myself for a good run in general. If I reach a new mile mark or PR, I usually will treat myself to something extraordinarily fattening or new running clothes.

6. Who do you admire most?

I admire quite a few people. I admire ultramarathoners like Mr. Looney and merigayle because I think what they do is amazing. I admire my senior year English teacher for getting me to love literature. I guess, though, I admire my mom the most. She became a unmarried mom back when that was not as accepted as it was now. I think she did a decent job raising me. I'm not too screwed up, I don't think.

7. What is the greatest advice you have ever received?

"Stay true to you". No matter how you think you may have to conform or fit in, stand up for yourself. Dignity will help you sleep at night. Oh, and "if someone is bullying you, act crazy and grab a big stick and start swinging".

8. What do wish you had learned younger?

Wow, this is a toughie. I wished I had learned the value of physical fitness earlier in life. I wished I had learned that life is short so don't forget to tell people you love them. I also wished I had learned not to waste opportunities.

9. What do you wish you could do but can't?

Tie a cherry stem with my tongue. I've tried a million times and have only been able to get it part way tied once.

10. How would your friends describe your personality?

I am the resident Dr Phil. I tell it like it is. My friends love to take me shopping because I will tell them they look fat in those jeans. I also always try to make people laugh, and sometimes I am just plain goofy.

11. What do you wear running? favorite outfit?

I guess what I wear depends on the weather. If it's hot, I go running with a tank top and shorts. But usually I am in Adidas pants and a tech tank, long-sleeve shirt or sweatshirt (if it's colder). 95% of the time you will find me in one of my many pairs of Adidas pants with a hoodie.

12. What has been your favorite race?

I think my favorite race so far is "Steve's Run" in Dowagiac, Michigan. It is put on by Southwestern Michigan College. I have met and chatted with Hal Higdon there (who frequently runs the race). You can do either a 5k or 10k. You run through a golf course, a cemetery, and have the opportunity to jump fences and stuff (in the 10k). It's a great time, and they recognize cancer survivors that run the race during the post-race ceremony. It is one classy small race.

13. Do you have a goal race right now?

I'm first looking to attempt the Sunburst Half-Marathon in 2008. I have a big fat DNF for that race, and I want to get the monkey off my back. Beyond that I want to run a marathon - maybe Chicago???

14. What makes you happy?

Lots of things make me happy - I'm easily amused. My dog, my friends, my family, great runs, hikes at the nearby state park, my favorite TV shows.

15. Tell us one interesting thing about you that you haven't said (at least not often) on this forum in the past.

I don't know what I haven't told you guys yet! Ummm, I was a spelling champ 3 years in a row at my elementary school. I can spell just about anything. I have partial hearing loss in my left ear due to a childhood illness. I didn't meet my brother until I was 14.

I don't know too many of you yet personally. I've met only oache, jensparks, and voodoo, and they are all fabulous people. But you already knew that.
