<p>The brain is wired to pay attention to the new.  Ever notice how time slows down in urgent/emergency/high emotional situations?  It is a survival mechanism:  "HEY YOU!  YEAH YOU!  PAY ATTENTION!  This may kill you, if it doesn't, learn from it."  Your first summer away from school stretched on forever.  It was new.  They gradually shortened in time.  With new experiences the brain layers the observations - it seems to stretch the time.  With stuff you've experienced before it's, "Yeah, whatever, next..."  The secret is to keep having new experiences..."</p>
