The couple we saw over the weekend.

We were about 100 meters out from our campsite and it was 8 pm and dusk. Two people emerge along the trail in very light summer gear and light day packs, with a small yapper of a dog on a lead but carrying a backpack and handle.

We stop to chat and they tell us that they've just done Northover Ridge.

We assume that they are camping, and it was a long day hike. Nope. No camping, and try 50 km+ in one day.

We say our goodbyes and shake our heads in disbelief. What were they thinking? Norhtover isn't for the faint of heart, the winds can blow you off the knife edge and if you miss the turnoff you can die. That's what the guide book says.

Well, the boy had his physical therapy appointment and was telling his therapist this, and the therapist laughs and says, "Oh, they knew what they were doing." She apparently is a patient, and she is ranked 18th in the world in some obscure death race category of competition. This was "fun". Yup. Climbing up and down and up and down into the 8000 foot mark through trails closed due to bear activity to walk along a knife edge ridge and descend in the near dark back through bear country to your car.

Yup. Hard core. Stupid, but hard core.
