I went out for a walk at lunch yesterday and while strolling down Stephen Avenue I espied a group of fourth graders lining up outside the Glenbow museum. You know the drill, 2x2 and quick step march.

All of a sudden a clear treble voice piped "I thought I heard the old man say" and the whole crew whooped and followed it up with a "John Kanaka-naka tu-rye-ay!" They marched down the avenue singing the sea shanty (John Kanaka) for all it was worth.

I had to follow and I sought out their teacher to thank her for teaching the kids to sing. She told me that she teaches them one a week, but that this one has stuck and they sing it all the time.

There is hope.
