Thanks for FO for last week's thread and question of the week. That seems to have become a regular thing for this thread, and I sometimes struggle to come up with anything meaningful. So as I sit here looking outside at the clear skies and snowy ground (yes, really), waiting for it to warm up just a little bit before heading out for a run, I got to wondering just what are my limits? As some of you know, I've run long runs down to -27°F to prepare for Boston. Part of not wanting to run Boston this year was because I want a break from that. I've run in -40° just to say I've done it, but only half a mile or so.

I guess I should also add that I'm really a fair weather runner... I dislike running in heavy rain but sprinkles are ok, and I don't like a lot of wind.

What are your limits? For just "going for a run," I prefer temps above -10°F for the coldest, and don't enjoy running in the 80's but I do it in the summer. But that's a dry heat, as they say. I'm sure I'd wilt in the H&H many of you run in.

Here's last week's tallies...

Tamster: 16 miles run and hoping to build up some more. C'mon, that 1,000 miles for 2010 is yours!

Hally: 7 miles run, 31 miles on the bike, hiking, walking and weights for our Cross Training Moderator Goddess!

Labduck: 41.5 miles run and support crew/pacer extraordinaire!

Hemerocallus: no run but 22k walking, spinning, core and a PR for fun hanging with friends

Opie: about 30 miles run, some yoga and support crew for Dove

mcsolar99: 70.5 miles run and 79 miles cycling... that's a lotta miles for both!

JJJessee: 45.22 miles with a nice steady 20 miler

Patrick: 35.13 miles run for our man of few words

evanflein: 62 miles run, 2.4 walked, and some time in the gym

Econo: 23.3 miles run and a total slacker on the core/strength stuff (hey, you said it! )

BTY: 33.1 miles, finding gears but no hills

Orange Mat: 47.4 miles run, 7 miles walked and running 20 milers for the heck of it (and that's perfectly ok!)

Paul: 17.3 miles in a recovery week

Fortunate One: 31.5 miles run and some volleyball (which I think is a really fun thing to do for a non-running XT)

Dove: 116.4 miles run. You so rock, Dovenator!!!!

Thanks for the thread this week E.

I found my lower limit a few years ago while running in -14F with -40F windchill. Hypothermia started to set in after 3 miles. Started to fall asleep while running. Scary. I haven't found my upper limit yet. It's somewhere over 100 degrees HHH. Lightning is a showstopper for me, and usually wind-driven rain is too, but not always.

ETA: JJJesse makes a good pppoint below - sometimes it's all about starting the run in certain conditions. If it's raining lightly and gets progressively harder, no biggie. If it's already raining hard, I don't want to go out into it.

My 15k is in 13 days. I don't plan to taper for this race until maybe the middle of next week.

Good question. My limits are heat & humidity. Hard to believe where I live, but that's just the way it is. It's no fun to run in those conditions & this should be fun!

This week brings rest, contentment and a return to running as the week progresses. I love my new compression socks! I wore them most of the day after my 15-mile leg with Dove from about 2-7 a.m.

Thanks for the thread this week Erika, and FO for last week.

I haven't met my temperature limit yet, but the coldest I've ever ran in was around 0°F so that's not much of a test. I run in the 100+°F several times a year without much issue. But I will not run outside during freezing rain or an ice storm. Much too treacherous!

Here's my plan this week, but it's very open to modification since I'm really wiped out from my trip to Arizona:

M - rest

Tu - 3 recovery...Actual: 3 miles at 9:00/mi

W - off

Th - 5 easy...Actual: 6 miles at 7:53/mi. First four were right around 8:00/mi; the last two obviously were not.

F - off

Sa - 10K race Oops, scratch this, the race filled up before I could register. That's probably a good thing. Now 7 - 9 easy...Actual: 9 miles at 7:34/mi. Made it through October for the first time in four years without injury!

Su - rest

Planned: about 15 miles...Actual: 18 miles

Hi Erica, thanks for the cold kickoff.

I haven't ever run in real cold weather but I do know that cold, 20's, drive me to the treadmill. I once ran about 9 miles or so in the 20's with a wind of 20 to 25 mph and my hands froze even with 2 pair of gloves. It took over an hour before they felt remotely normal. The rest of me was fine. I have run and raced in 98 with humidity and while it is not my favorite it is doable. I also will not start in a heavy rain but if it happens during the run I just go with it.

well, apparently yesterday my limit was just running in rain, even though it was probably upper 50's.

I've run in downpours before, run in sleet, run in snow, and run in upper 90's. I guess where my weather limits are fickle and just depend on whether or not I'm training for anything and just how badly I want to avoid the treadmill.

My goal this week is to hit 1000 miles for the year, so I think I need to run about 30 miles to do so.

Thanks Erika. I spent a lot of time running in the H&H this past summer that I almost don't remember how to run in the windy, wet and cold. I think freezing rain/sleet would be the toughest to deal with; I'll let you know how I like it once we get some of that this winter.

Shooting for the mid-40s in mileage worked well for me last week, so I'm going to give it a go again. I never got to yoga class last week however; my arm was still aching from my fall so I laid off all upper body endeavors. I'm virtually all healed now, so I hope to get to class once if not twice this week.

Thanks for doing the week, Erika!

Good question! Much like Lab and OM, I seem to have the most trouble getting out when it's a really cold rain or sleet. I'm not really keen on the heat and humidity, but will run in it and lower my expectations for any resemblence of speed. On the cold end, I've been down into the -20°C's range without too much problem, as long as it's not too windy. Mostly in the really low temps my quads and glutes seem to turn to blocks of ice no matter how many layers I dress in, then take forever to warm up after. Just ask my DH! No spooning for me after a LR!

I don't like to start a run in medium to heavy rain especially if the temps are below 50°.

I wilt in the heat! Can't get acclimated to it, either; I've tried. I used to walk to work in Omaha in temps down around -10F; all I needed was the proper clothing and it was just fine. In fact, it was fun, especially when it was snowy and beautiful.

I'm HOPING for some snow runs this winter, as I bought some Yaktrax and want to justify the purchase. Maybe even a treacherous ice storm!

Mon: rested + core (yay!)

Tue: 5.5 easy

Wed: worked, no time to run

Thu: 3.5 with some uptempo 800's (not quite speedwork, though)

Fri: 2 treadmill miles + core. Hip hurts

Sat: 0, hip still hurts.

Sun: .9 mile running (hip...) + 20 min eliptical stuff (= 2 miles)
