I'm short on time today, but wanted to at least get the weekly started for all the planners out there!

Question this week if you'd like: Did you play sports in highschool? If so, what did you play? brag on any accomplishments you might have had also - like school records, championships, etc.

and if sports weren't part of your school extracurricular activities, was there something else you did?

Last weeks tallies:

Tamster: 17.4 miles and enjoying the easy week between hill training and interval training

JJJessee: 42.80 miles with quite the snowy adventure!

Heme: totals?

Opie: 24.87 (did you do that just for me?) and a smokin' fast 5K PR of 24:45 and an AG win! Opie rocks!

HappyFeat: 32 miles - looks like the tummy issues subsided? I hope so!

FortunateOne: 33 miles with a Maui Marathon time of 4:33:34 and overdosing on Vitamin D

BTY: totals? the plan was 42 but did you do it?? don't keep us hanging here!

Paul: 46.7 with a 5K race and an AG win also! What is Oklahoma putting in the water these days?

Thanks for the weekly kick-off, Tammy!

Yes, I was one of the jocks in HS, but always did better in the individual sports. I dabbled in a bit of basketball, gymnastics and fencing, but of course, track and cross country were my main specialties. I was the best at my school in the middle distance events.... that's all they let us girls do back then, since they thought our uteruses would fall out or something if we ran over 880 yards track or 2 miles XC (snork!)........ and there was always one girl in our rival school who could beat me every time. My biggest thrill was to go back to my HS reunion this last summer and have my old coaches not just remember me, but digging thru the archives for me to find the old XC records, 'cause they thought I'd be the only one there interested in seeing them. Oh yea, that and placing 5th overall in the reunion 5K... sweet!

This week will be the second last week before my 16 week 50K prep program starts up... so I guess I'd better enjoy it.

Thanks, Tammy. I was not much of a jock in HS, but the school was so small that they recruited me to the football team for a while. I ran a little cross country too. I'm sure the coach (1 for just about all sports) would be amazed to know that I have developed into a marathoner late in life.

Hi Tammy. Thanks for taking the thread this week.

I never thought of myself as a jock in HS since a lot of my friends and I were in the college preparatory classes for math and science and participated in sports together. I think that's one of the great things about the school I went to and my kids are now going to - there are a lot of athletic teams, and almost everyone has to participate in a couple of sports per year in order to keep them all competitive, which thery are. We had class sizes around 130 when I was in school, and now they run 90 to 100 per grade, but they still offer more sports teams than some local schools 4 or 5 times larger.

I played offensive tackle and defensive end in football, and threw the shot and discus on the track team. In football I didn't have any personal exploits to brag about, though I did start in every game but one (lost 20 pounds due to intestinal virus that week), and we won two straight Sectional Championships for our school, compiling a respectable 14-3-3 record in those two years. In shot and disc, not much to brag about except that my teammate and I were ranked 1 & 2 in school history in the discus when we graduated. Everyone before us was pretty awful, though, so it's still not much to brag about.

I think what I took away from Track & Field, moreso than in football, was to participate in something that I could grow to love, regardless of whether I might ever win a medal or even make it to the finals.

I'm growing discouraged with my running this month due to all of the snow we're getting and the resulting poor condition of the roads in my neighborhood. In the past I've been able to run out on the roads all winter long, but this year they are not wide enough. So the only running I'm getting in is whatever I can do on my lunch break, and now they are not clearing the bike and jog trail as well as they have in past years, so those numbers are diminishing as well.

Thanks, Tammy. I was so nonathletic! I hated everything about 7th grade gym class, especially the coach who "taught" it. When his football team was doing badly, he would take it out on us with an insane number of situps and stairs, and he dealt with any problem kids like me with the paddle. In light of that, it's pretty amazing how I've turned out, huh? In high school, I was involved in debate, student council and band.

I plan about 6:40 worth of running this week, barring no obstacles. Beginning with some rest and recovery today.

Played some baseball and basketball in early high school years, but was more interested in guitar, playing in bands, girls, Yes, acting,

Monty Python, and singing with the chorus. Gave up the sports, it stopped being fun in high school--way too serious--like the world would

fall apart if we lost. Sports was the most fun when adults weren't involved. Wiffleball in the street or backyard and pick-up basketball games.

That's why I like running and the scene, it's self-driven, there's community, and it always feels like a pick-up basketball game to me.

Hello, Masterfuls.

I attended a private parochial school that had barely 50 students per class so there was rarely a cut on a sports team if one were interested in playing. I tried football as a freshman and lasted just two days (I was 110 pounds and there was no JV team). I took up cross-country and it was the best decision of my life. I lettered all four years, and played basketball and track as well. By no means was I great -- my two-mile PR was 11:15 -- but it was a lot of fun.

I wish I were so organized as to have a plan for the week. But in general, if I can 15-20 miles of running and three dumbbell sessions I will call it a success. The midweek storm figures to wreak some havoc in the way of providing unintentional cross-training.

Two miles today -- I waited until noon for the temps to get above zero -- and some light weightlifting.

Good runs, all

I was not athletic in high school.

It wasn't until junior college that I took a "jogging class" because there was a PE requirement.

In my teenage summers, I enjoyed horseback riding and waterskiing.

Wednesday:......8.................... ZIP - butt-draggin' tired and couldn't even try. This week feels 2 weeks long already!

Thursday: ..........4....................8 - mixing up the pace a bit with 15 sec faster pace for parts of most miles.

Friday:..............Rest..................4...nice slow recovery run

I was very non-athletic in school also. Actually, I still am non-athletic. I played one year of tennis in middle school, but then was always too afraid to try out for anything in high school. I went to a large HS, so lots of talented athletes. I went the route of journalism instead and was a writer/editor for the school newspaper and also was semi-involved in theater - doing behind the scenes stuff like props.

plan for this week is 30 miles with 2 intervals sessions:

mon: ...... run ............ 5 miles (47:01)

tues: ...... intervals ..... 5.5 miles (47:11), with 4x4min intervals, 3min recoveries.

wed: ....... rest ........... rest

thur: ........ intervals ..... bad lazy tammy. 0 miles

fri: .......... rest ............ rest. date night.

sat: ........ long run ...... 12 miles

sun: ........ run ............. 2 mi TM, elliptical and weights.

I was the typical last-picked kid in school. Glasses, chunky legs, nerdy disposition... so of course no one believed I could do any sports, including me. So I never tried. I played music instead, piano mostly, and some violin too. I was the accompanist for the plays as well as all the choirs and chorus groups in high school. In that way I was affiliated with the theater "crowd" but not really part of it. Always on the fringe of things, I suppose.

In my senior year in college, my housemates asked me to come with them to the weight room, and it took a little coercing, but I went. We'd jog there, some distance that seemed unbelievably long (which I'm betting now is barely a half mile) and I could never make it without having to take a walking break. But eventually I got stronger, and could jog the whole way back too. As for the weightlifting, I found I really had a knack for that, as well as being quite limber, so who knows, I could've done gymnastics or something when I had been a child. But like I said, to look at me, I wasn't what anyone would ever say looked "athletic". I guess a self-image like that is hard to shake, virtually a lifetime later.

Hamstring is on the mend, and I think I've learned my lesson about rest days (have to take them regularly!), so I'm back in gear this week. Probably won't hit 40 miles again yet, but that's OK (or so I'm telling myself).

Mon......... 4 miles, yoga class

Tues........ 5.5 miles

Wed........ some snow shoveling, 7 miles (TM intervals)

Thu.......... rest day, yoga class

Fri........... 9 miles

Sat.......... yoga, 5 miles (group track w/o)

Sun......... 9.6 miles

totals: 40.1 miles, 3x yoga

I didn't participate in organized sports in school either. Too small for football & basketball, no baseball skills, and too SLOW for track. A natural mathlete who loved the outdoors. Lots of hiking and fishing for my extracurricular sports.
