Plans: Post 'em if you've got 'em.

Question: for you, what is mysterious about running?

Sorry the totals were delayed this week. Jet lag, among other things.

I guess the mystery for me is how we as masters runners can continue, not only to run, but even improve, that running can change us in a positive way when so many other changes at this time can be negative or there is very little change.

Speaking of change, I will post the plan but as Paul mentioned in the daily, old man winter is banging on the door so we shall see...

Although I don't have a marathon scheduled, we're starting to look at a goal time of 3:52, taking my goal half time x 2 +10 min., so I'm supposed to start running the Yasso 800's in 3 min., 52 sec. 4 min. would be more typical in the past.

Day.......................Plan.........................................................................................................................................................................................................Actual

Monday...lunch yoga; after work, swim 45 minutes + run 3 miles....................................................................................................................done-3 mi. + the other stuff

Tuesday...rest....................................................................................................................................................................................................................done

Wednesday...maybe XC ski................................................................................................................................................................................done-about 26 minutes

Thursday...treadmill: warmup, (800m x 3) + (400m x 4), cooldown......................................................................................................................................done-8 mi.

Friday.......more snow, so resting..........................................................................................................................................................................................done

Saturday...LR............................................................................................................................................................................................................done-10.41 mi.

Sunday.....6-8 mi. if weather cooperates..............................................................................................................................................done-6 mi. with 3.5 tempo in the middle

Thanks FO. The thought that came to me as I was running this morning was about how when you set out looking for bliss, you don't find it, and that it happens when you're not really trying for it. Those blissfully perfect runs, every so often we get one and then we try so hard to replicate the conditions in order to get a taste of that perfection again.... I suppose that's a mystery in a way. I'd like to think that the bliss does exist, just that we're trying too hard to "find" it, and so we miss the mark. I guess just having faith that it is out there somewhere, and if we just run with the best of intentions, the bliss will find us.

Another wide-open week for me. All the merrier. :)

Mon........... 4 miles

Tue............ 60 min stationary bike (16 miles), 3 miles (TM)

Wed.......... 7 miles (TM intervals) ***INJURY***

Thur........... rest day, 45 min (11 miles) stationary bike

Fri............. yoga at home

Sat............ yoga class

Sun........... yoga class, 65 minutes (7.2 miles) elliptical

totals: 14 miles run, 27 miles stationary bike, 7.2 miles elliptical, 3x yoga

....hmm, perhaps the mystery is how long can I go without an injury... ok, gonna take some time off from here for a while, have to seriously get my butt out of a sling and keep it that way!

Three things about running puzzle me: How come the best runs happen when you start out feeling awful? How come running long (4 or more hours for me) seems to "fix" all the niggly aches and pains? and finally, how come, no matter what the distance, the first 3 miles and the last 10% are always hard?

This week I should cut back a bit, but I don't really want to.

Monday: rest................................................................weights

Tuesday: 6..................................................................6 miles

Wednesday: 10............................................................8 miles

Thanks, FO! The most mysterious thing to me about running is that sometimes the best runs happen at the most illogical times. Like when I'm tired. Or just ran hard the day before. And sometimes the runs you have to really force yourself to get out to do, end up being really really nice. I don't get it, but it works! (of course, the flip side is the sucky runs when everything should be good... don't understand those either, but they happen!)

Monday: 12 minutes (1.5 miles) elliptical, 20 minutes weights at lunch; 4 hilly miles run and a .5 mile walk after work

Tuesday: 17:20 minutes (2.2 miles) elliptical, 10 minutes abs/core; 6.3 snowy miles and .5 mile walk after work

Wednesday: 8.1 hilly miles outside, 3.43 on the treadmill for 11.5 total, and .4 mile walk c/d

Thursday: 12 minutes (1.4 miles) elliptical, 25 minutes weights, 6.2 miles run on the treadmill, .8 mile walking

Friday: No run; travel to Juneau late afternoon

Saturday: 11.1 mile tempo run, 7:59 avg pace (weee!), .4 mile walk

I would echo Dove's post...my thoughts exactly! Well except for the running "4 hours" part since I've never done that; but it does seem that it takes about 4 miles to work the kinks out.

Monday:............ 5....................DONE, each mile 15 seconds faster than the last. Rt calf tight and crampy from the weekend run.

Tuesday: ...........4....................DONE...slowly..but perhaps not slow enough to be a "recovery run." Rt calf fine; now Lt AT tight.

Wednesday:.......8....................DONE...alternating every 1/4 mile faster and slower by 15 seconds; was harder than last week - and slower by 2 minutes.

Thursday: ..........4...................ZIP....yoga seemed the wiser choice tonight.

Friday:..............Rest................yoga again.

Saturday:...........12..................10 seemed wiser and went very well, managed to keep my pace slower than last week and closer to the goal.

Rt AT tight again..I suspect the TM is the cause. Lt upper shin hurt when walking to car..hope nothing's brewing there.

Sunday:...........Rest................

Total: 27

Note for next week: scrap the newly introduced twice weekly speed workout and just do one a week until legs adjust to the added demand.

I'll echo Erika's comment. I've given up trying to analyse the good runs and the bad, except where the reason is obvious, which isn't very often.
