I think there have been 3 or 4 kids recently in the US (like in the past week or two!) who have committed suicide because of their sexual orientation. It is so sad that these kids have to go thru this and be bullied and alienated to the point of suicide. I am very lucky that my high school was very gay friendly with many openly gay faculty members. I hope that no one I went to school with ever felt alienated by their sexual preference. However, I know that my school is not the norm, it was a Friend's school.

Last week a Rutgers freshman committed suicide jumpng from the George Washington Bridge after his roommates secretly taped him having sex with another man and published it on the internet. From reading the news articles it had nothing to do with homophobia. The roommates just thought it would be funny to post the scene on the internet. The pressures on young gays and lesbians trying to find their place in this world is sometimes unfortunately really overbearing and people just don't realize the consequences that sometimes their bullying, teasing or other acts cause.

I have sons that age, so it hits home. Regardless of whether he was gay or straight, there is no excuse for what his room mate did and I am sickened by the comments I've been hearing and reading elsewhere that are along the lines of "well, it was JUST a prank, why ruin their lives over it?"

There is likely no way to prove a link between what they did and his suicide, but at a minimum there was a gross invasion of privacy and yes, they must be held accountable for their actions.
